Cool Anthony's Week 1 Picks

3

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY NIGHT

INDIANAPOLIS
35, New Orleans 24 (+6) - Even last year the Saints went just 1-3 both ways against the AFC and their off-season priorities may have been skewed: Did they really need to draft a wide receiver in the first round? And why did they focus on the secondary in free agency when their real problem on defense is the lack of size found elsewhere on the unit?

SUNDAY

New England
30, N.Y. JETS 20 (+6 1/2) - The value on the Pats here is awful, but you better get used to that because it's going to be that way with them all year long - and those who bet on them when visiting the Jets have long since gotten used to collecting: New England has covered eight in a row in that setting.

WASHINGTON 23, Miami 16 (+3) - The Redskins finally have some stability at the quarterback spot and the home team has won the last five meetings in this one.

BUFFALO 21 (+3), Denver 13 - No Week 1 slate would be complete without at least one home underdog winning outright - and this would appear to be the logical candidate, given that the Broncos opened both the 2006 and 2005 seasons with outright losses as road favorites, and did the same thing in their road opener (in Week 2) of 2004 as well.

JACKSONVILLE 20, Tennessee 16 (+6 1/2) - Titans had the league's worst defense a year ago, and the one decent player it did have - Pacman Jones - is enduring the NFL's version of internment without trial. But is David Garrard the one to take maximum advantage of this?

Pittsburgh 23, CLEVELAND 10 (+4 1/2) - Pittsburgh has won and covered seven straight over the Browns and the one player who might have helped Cleveland reverse that trend - Brady Quinn - will be on the bench. Romeo Crennel would be well advised not to wait too long before remedying that, or else he'll be somebody's defensive coordinator when next season opens.

Philadelphia 17, GREEN BAY 6 (+3) - The Packers might be the one team in the entire league that can't exploit Philly's diminutive front seven on the ground and the Eagles have covered seven of their last eight vs. Green Bay - and the Packers would probably just as soon forget the one they did cover, because that was the infamous 4th-and-26 game from the 2003 playoffs.

Carolina 27 (+1), ST. LOUIS 17 - Domes have never fazed the Panthers - they're 14-3 against the spread in their last 17 indoor tries - who figure to get their 2007 redemption tour off on a promising note.

MINNESOTA 16, Atlanta 6 (+3) - At the risk of overanalyzing this perfectly dreadful game, Joey Harrington is 0-4 lifetime at Triple H with a passer rating of 62.2. And how could the over-under total opened as high as 36? 28 or 29 would have made far more sense.

Kansas City 17 (+3), HOUSTON 10 - The Chiefs don't have a prayer of duplicating last year's playoff appearance, but should they be field-goal underdogs to the Texans? I think not.

OAKLAND 20, Detroit 14 (+1 1/2) - It might actually take the Raiders three games to match their entire victory total of 2006! In Week 3 they host the notoriously West Coast-phobic Browns, and here they entertain a team they've never lost to at home (4-0 and having outscored them 128-58) and one that is 4-33 straight up outdoors since 2001, of which 2-27 on grass.

SEATTLE 17, Tampa Bay 13 (+6) - At least in terms of final records, the Bucs figure to be one of the NFL's most improved teams this year, and the home field has been an absolute albatross in this battle of bicentennial expansion teams, certainly from a wagering standpoint (five consecutive non-covers). Take it.

SAN DIEGO 23, Chicago 20 (+6) - The seven-game losing streak for Super Bowl losers in the ensuing season opener was snapped by last year's Seahawks (even though they didn't cover), and Lovie Smith's D is an even match for LT and the Bears have beaten the Chargers four straight. Surely they can be trusted to keep this game competitive.

DALLAS 21, N.Y. Giants 17 (+5 1/2) - My, my - the dirty linen is really flapping in the breeze at Camp Coughlin. But the Giants have covered six in a row in this series and this number shows every indication of being too high.

MONDAY NIGHT

Baltimore 24 (+2 1/2), CINCINNATI 21 - At the end of the day - or should I say the end of the year? - the Bengals may very well have won as many or more games than the Ravens, but at this point they have no business being favored over a team that preceded them to the wire in the most recently-played season by a whopping five games.

SAN FRANCISCO 27, Arizona 20 (+3) - The fans in Frisco need to get nasty: Their team was swept by the Cards in both 2006 and 2005 - and don't they remember how Matt Leinart snubbed them two and a half years ago by staying at USC for one more year because he didn't want the 49ers to draft him? And who's laughing at those "Faithful is Believing" ads now?

BEST BETS: BUFFALO, PHILADELPHIA, CAROLINA

Man oh man....

I seem to have much better luck picking college spreads these days. I have been betting w/a friend at work and I'm 6-0 after the first two weeks!!!
