Cool Anthony's Week 8 Picks

1

Last week: 7-6-1. Season totals: 45-55-2, Pct. .451. Best Bets: 10-11, Pct. .476.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS
17, Kansas City 3 (+11 1/2) - When the Jets lost to the Raiders last week, it must have thrown a major scare into Chiefs club president Carl Peterson, who has cast covetous eyes on Matthew Stafford. How else to explain Peterson's convenient decision to continue the de-facto suspension of KC's only tangible asset on offense, or of the entire team for that matter (Larry Johnson)? And even at full strength, the Chiefs don't do a whole lot of scoring on the road - 71 points in their last seven such games, all losses.

N.Y. Giants 23 (+1), PITTSBURGH 16 - The Steelers haven't faced this kind all season - this is their first game against a team that presently has a winning record - and the Giants have lost only once (with one tie) in their last seven forays into what John Murtha insists is a hotbed of rednecks and racists. And here's my fantasy tip of the week: Brandon Jacobs facing a Pittsburgh defense which, in spite of everything, is still a 3-4.

San Diego 24, New Orleans 14 (+3) - Three years ago the Saints got famously hosed when they had a home game turned into a road game, courtesy of Hurricane Katrina. Now it has happened again: They get a home game turned into a virtual road game, in that Wembley Stadium is natural grass - which is San Diego's home surface, but not theirs (and not for nothing, but New Orleans is 6-12 straight up on grass since 2005). Also, no Reggie Bush, and the Chargers have won and covered four of the last five in this series and seven of nine lifetime.

NEW ENGLAND 21, St. Louis 17 (+7 1/2) - Break up the Rams! And someone out there has broken up New England's running game: Laurence Maroney has gone out for the season, and Maroney's successor, Sammy Morris, is likely out with a knee injury incurred in Monday night's rout of Denver. Definitely take the points - and with the Rams not having lost in chowder land since 1974 ...

PHILADELPHIA 33, Atlanta 23 (+7 1/2) - Fat Boy (Andy Reid) is totally phat coming off a bye week: He has a career record of 9-0 straight up and 7-2 against the line doing that (12-0 and 9-3 if you include playoffs) and the Falcons haven't won in Philadelphia since 1988 (0-4 with one half-point cover and three losses against the spread). The value nerds will simply have to look the other way at the admittedly out-of-whack number.

CAROLINA 20, Arizona 13 (+4 1/2) - Still haven't figured out how the Panthers are doing it, but they do boast a current four-game winning streak over the Cardinals, who could very well get caught looking ahead to the trio of division games that await them after this one. It is also a case of a Mountain/Pacific time zone team being forced to play in the early time slot - and those babies are now 2-9-1 versus the points this year.

Buffalo 23, MIAMI 10 (+1) - Suddenly no one's talking about the Wildcat Offense any more and Buffalo has covered eight times in a row against the Dolphins. Best bet.

Washington 30, DETROIT 7 (+7 1/2) - Sean Hannity has Alan Colmes, and the Redskins have the Lions, whom they have beaten in 21 out of the last 23, and covering in 17 of them, with one push. They're also 6-2 pointwise in domes since 2001.

BALTIMORE 20, Oakland 6 (+7) - Not many people reading this will remember it, but I do recall how Lyle Alzado publicly ripped into Sam Rutigliano after their Browns had lost at home to Oakland in a 1980 AFC divisional playoff game. Well that's the last time the Raiders covered the spread in a road game against that franchise - and they've also lost twelve in a row on artificial turf, covering only once.

DALLAS 16, Tampa Bay 10 (+1) - The fashionably decadent thing to do these days is to go against the Cowboys, no matter who they're playing - but what's so fashionable about Tampa Bay's 1-8 lifetime record at The Hole-In-The-Roof or its 2-8 straight-up log since 2006 as a visitor on the carpet?

JACKSONVILLE 17, Cleveland 14 (+7) - Jacksonville's lay-and-pray offense holds little appeal at prices like this, and the home team in this one has dropped four in a row, both ways. Take it.

HOUSTON 27, Cincinnati 23 (+10) - And don't even think of spotting this number either: Houston has yet to defeat the Bengals in three tries, and if Dan Orlovsky could score 21 points against the Texans defense, why turn up your nose at Ryan Fitzpatrick?

SAN FRANCISCO 16, Seattle 6 (+5) - Since the 2002 realignment made these teams division rivals, their annual head-to-head twin bills have produced six sweeps and nary a single split. Seattle lost the first meeting at home, in Week 2 - and dating all the way back to 1997, teams losing the first game to a division rival at home are a staggering 99 games under .500 - 82-181 - in the rematch on the road.

MONDAY NIGHT

Indianapolis
23 (+3 1/2), TENNESSEE 17 - Another journey down memory lane: Where were you on December 8, 2002? I ask that because that was the date of Indy's most recent - and only, ever - non-cover as an underdog in an AFC South game. And how mature of the Titans last week, throwing a temper tantrum because they didn't get to shut out the Chiefs, who catalyzed the outburst by kicking a field goal to make it 27-3 with just under five minutes left in the game. Well how are they going to handle it if Peyton Manning engineers a touchdown drive the first time the Colts have the ball?

BEST BETS: N.Y. GIANTS, SAN DIEGO, BUFFALO

Miami +1 is probably the weirdest line I've seen all year. That line is so bat**** insane that I assume we're in an alternate universe where the Dolphins have a chance of winning.
