Default NFL Draft, Overhype or Big News?

Is it me or does it seem like the draft is a bit overhyped? All week it's been the cover on every homepage of sports sites. I'm a big Football fan like us all, but enough press people, it's a draft

Free agency has made the draft somewhat less important, but it is still a big event nonetheless.

Personally I'd like to see the NFL adopt some sort of lottery - or at the absolute least, implement a coin flip between the worst team in the AFC and the worst team in the NFC (or use the result of the Super Bowl for this purpose, with the worst team in the conference that loses the Super Bowl getting the #1 pick) - in order to preserve the integrity of the game.

I enjoy watching the NFL draft more then any other draft though. After the first few picks in the nba with all the new interntinol guys and hs guys you really dont know as many people in the nba draft. The nfl draft the hiesman winner can go in the 5th round.

The NFL is by far and away the most popular sport in this country. Which stands to reason the draft will be insanely popular.

Hell, the NFL Draft is probably the 3rd or 4th most popular event in sports. I garuntee you the NFL Draft will get higher ratings this weekend than any baseball game will.

Probably higher than most of the NBA Playoff games too.

It's both. It was so freaking overhyped beyond belief. There is way too analysis for me. At the same time, it's Big News for a team like the 49ers and fans. Being a fan of the New York Giants, this isn't big news this years since we don't have a first round pick and we have a total of 4 picks. I'm not really going to watch it as I have in past years, but I will be watching it.

It is hyped, but because football is overwhelmingly popular as FSUViking pointed out, and the fact that football fans have an insatiable thirst for football during the slow offseason. The draft fills that desire until we start talking training camp. Personally, I'll watch the draft early on, then switch to the playoffs and check back periodically.

Moving the draft to the middle of the offseason (prior to the mid-'70s it was held right after the Pro Bowl) was a brilliant move on the NFL's part.

IT'S OVER! WOO!

Now if they start covering the mini-camps..."who's holding out [on optional practice]" - THAT'S ENOUGH!

Nah, I don't think NFL teams will purposely throw 16 games just to get a pick, especially since it is harder to predict success than in the NBA (which recently has some questionable turnouts).

And plus, like this year the team that won the lottery would've wanted a trade of something...because if you take the best player...you can't build a franchise around a WR or CB. And the QB position was questionable to begin with.

The sad thing is the draft out-drew the NBA playoffs head-to-head last weekend. There is no doubt which sport is king in America...

It was the highest rated draft of all time, and was the highest rated show on cable, behind WWE RAW.

I think it got like a 4.9 rating.

I think they said something like 30 million people tune in for at least part of the draft coverage at some point during the two days of coverage.

It was like 18 hours; when was ESPN getting back to *real* sports, anyways?

I heard that last year, ESPN was the first to cover all four sports at one time...the Draft, some NBA/NHL playoffs, and a MLB game.

Do they give comprehensive coverage to the NBA Draft...I'm actually more curious about that one.

The NBA Draft is on TNT, as is the Lottery I believe.

The problem many folks might find with the NBA Draft is that they don't have much background knowledge on the high schoolers drafted, especially this season since there doesn't seem to be one outstanding, can't-miss prospect. Gerald Green from Texas appears to be the top high school player in the NBA Draft. He had previously committed to Oklahoma State. However, many fans are familiar with the college players drafted.

The NBA Draft has been on TNT for several years now and as far as I am concerned it should stay there. TNT does the best job of covering the NBA and do an excellent job with the draft. The Lottery has always been on NBC and now ABC. They always do it during halftime of one of the weekend playoff games.

There are a bunch of high schoolers throwing their names in because they are afraid they won't be able to next year. Unfortunately for them we may see a good number of them fall to the second round or go undrafted altogether as, like Alex said, there really are not any hot prospects this year. The one guy whom most scouts thought could play in the NBA next year, Josh McRoberts so far seems intent on coming to Duke next year. Gerald Green is another one of those kids who thinks he is going to be a hot shot lottery pick because he was the high scorer of the McD's Game. Anyone remember Jonathan Bender who broke MJ's record?

Is Bender still with the Pacers, or even in the NBA for that matter? He has certainly been a poster child for why it's a smart idea to play college ball.
