Lewis Announces Retirement From Boxing

Fri Feb 6, 3:48 PM ET
By ROBERT MILLWARD, AP Sports Writer

LONDON - Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis is going out on top, and he insists he won't be back.

He retired Friday after a professional career of more than 14 years, the first active heavyweight champion to quit in nearly 50 years.

The 38-year-old boxer said that after months of deliberation he decided to leave the ring rather than defend his WBC title in a rematch against Vitali Klitschko.

"It's a special day in my life," Lewis said at a news conference. "I'd like to announce that June 21, 2003, was my last fight as a professional boxer."

"It has been a great honor to be the standard bearer of boxing for the last decade," he added. "Let the next era begin."

Good. I like to see athletes retire on top. I just hope he stays retired, unlike countless other boxers.

Yep, but born in London. So I guess the best are transplanted to Canada. Like most of your olympic sprinters.

Maybe Canadian track and field offers a lot more money and facilities than their tiny Caribbean island, and the competition is slighty easier to make the olympics than emmigrating to the U.S.

By the way, I never said Canada sucks.

Regardless of him finishing "on top"...people know Vitali had his number in L.A., and this move is a sign that Lennox wanted no part of the hungry Ukranian for a second go-around.

Lewis will retire on top but I think his retirement will be short.
