Default What is freedom?

What is Freedom? Are we getting away from it or getting better at it as a country?

Freedom is the peoples right to choose, many things we are doing in this country are closing off our freedoms, like Happy Meal bans, and smoking laws. However, if they are voted upon BY THE PEOPLE, and a MAJORITY approves than that is democracy and that is what we signed up for, weather we like it or not.

For instance, the Happy Meal ban is currently only in California, that is what they wanted. However if it became nation wide that would be a breach of freedom, most americans DO NOT want Happy Meals banned and WOULD NOT vote for that retarded law.

Freedom is being able to move, both metaphorically and non-metaphorically. As the gap between the rich and poor widenes, we've no doubt gotten further from it, as poverty, in my opinion, is the biggest threat to freedom in this country-- it's hard to move when you have no money or resources to move.

To a small extent, Obama has helped, but, no doubt, we've got a long away to go and things continue to look like they are getting worse.

I disagree that, by your definition we have moved further away from freedom. While the rich get richer, the poor do not really get poorer. Today's poor are a lot richer than the poor were ten years ago. Not only that, but while the gap between the rich and poor does continue to grow, the simple fact is that in America, if you take the time and put in the effort EVERYONE has the chance to make millions of dollars.

My family is by every definition poor, however I already know that I will not be poor, while I will have lots of debt when I graduate from Akron, I will be making 6 figures easily at least within a couple years of graduation. Starting salary for my job is about 80 or 90k and I will have a Masters degree.

So is it really that hard to move up in society. With online education systems, and student loans for those who can't pay for college? No its not, you just need to apply yourself.

I was directing my statement at the most recent poster...Ellis and not at you.

If I was directing my statement at a post not directly above me I would have included a quote box. As I did in this one.

Not trying to sound rude, just for future reference.

Ohh,..sorry.

Just for your information, I do appreciate your views and thoughts. The worst thing one can do is label another, or verbal attack...not saying I have not done that in the past, but it just kind of kills a debate/discussion.

But freedom is not license - either morally (e.g., granting people the "right" to have sex, etc. in public) or economically (e.g., granting people the "right" to pay workers a substandard wage - or, at one time, the "right" of one human being to own another).

Freedom gives us the right to make good and bad choices for ourselves. It gives people the chance to start new businesses. It gives people the right to be stupid if they are willing to accept the consequences for their stupidity.

I agree, sorry if I have verbally attacked you at times. I sometimes lose my cool when I feel others are attacking me verbally lol. I appreciate your views as well.

Also I agree with Anthony. As well as Catman.

I don't think Freedom is ever a guarantee, freedom is yours, should you choose to accept it, but when you commit a serious or violent crime your freedom is taken away from you.

No, no,...you didn't verbally attack by any means, sorry if that sounded wrong. Violent crimes shouldn't warrant freedoms, I agree.
