Cool Anthony's Week 7 Picks

1

Last week: 7-4-2. Season totals: 38-43-8, Pct. .472. Best Bets: 8-7-3, Pct. .528.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 24, San Francisco 6 (+9 1/2) - Hey Mike Nolan: Does the name Bert Jones mean anything to you? Back in 1978, Jones suffered a shoulder separation in the last preseason game - and Ted Marchibroda kept bringing him back too soon, and it ended up ruining his whole career. So don't even think about letting Alex Smith take a single solitary snap in this game - particularly with the Giants leading the league in sacks. And who said you had to be in baseball to be dubbed Mr. October: Doesn't Tom Coughlin qualify for that moniker with his 12-2 straight up and 13-1 spread record in October as the Giants' head martinet - oops, I mean head coach?

CINCINNATI 23, N.Y. Jets 20 (+6) - How can you possibly lay this number on a 1-4 team playing an opponent to which it has lost five in a row? And did you see Ocho Cinco go Jim Oddo on the sidelines last week? The Bengals can only lead to a heap of trouble right now.

Baltimore 16, BUFFALO 6 (+3) - Had J.P. Losman been healthy the Bills would have been the pick. With Trent Edwards at quarterback, the Ravens are a lock.

WASHINGTON 23, Arizona 14 (+7) - The Redskins were very unlucky to lose (and push against the spread) in Green Bay last week, and are one point (a 16-15 loss in 2000) from having an eight-game win streak over the Cardinals. But Kurt Warner insists he will play here despite torn ligaments in his non-throwing elbow, so be careful.

New England 35, MIAMI 17 (+16 1/2) - This is the largest spread favoring a road team in an NFL game since October 11, 1992, when the 49ers spotted 17 at Foxboro (how's that for irony?) and didn't cover, winning by 12. Key thing to remember here: The Patriots have scored a TD in the last 3 1/2 minutes in five of their six games this year, including one with 42 seconds left against Cleveland that enabled them to cover the spread.

DETROIT 27, Tampa Bay 13 (+2) - Tampa Bay is a no-go on artificial turf - six straight losses by a combined 89 points - so the Lions, who have also covered in each of the last five meetings, are a no-brainer in this one.

NEW ORLEANS 28, Atlanta 24 (+9) - Interesting how Byron Leftwich's first start as a Falcon would come on the road - yet hardly surprising in view of the fact that Joey Harrington threw for minus three net touchdowns in his three road starts. I've always been unreceptive to the idea that a heretofore-struggling team automatically turns into a powerhouse just because they win one game.

Tennessee 16, HOUSTON 13 (+1) - I'm through with Houston until Andre Johnson comes back - and Johnson didn't practice Wednesday. Neither did Vince Young, but the Titans have won eight of ten versus the Texans lifetime and should find a way to win this even if Young can't play.

Kansas City 20 (+3), OAKLAND 10 - The Raiders favored to win a division game when they have lost an NFL-record 16 consecutive division games? That's insanity - absolute insanity.

PHILADELPHIA 12, Chicago 11 (+4) - Fox has yanked this game from its doubleheader status and replaced it with the Minnesota at Dallas game. I wonder why: Did they think that T.O. just might garner better ratings than Kevin Curtis, and/or that Adrian Peterson figures to lure in more viewers than Cedric Benson, who could be the biggest horror show the NFL has seen at running back since the Blair Thomas Project? And the total on this clunker opened at 41?

DALLAS 31, Minnesota 24 (+9 1/2) - In order for the Cowboys to cover, they would need to win this game by double digits - after having lost to the Vikings the last five times they've faced them, all by double digits! Take the points.

SEATTLE 27, St. Louis 21 (+8 1/2) - The Seahawks could be the biggest underachievers in the league so far this year, and with Marc Bulger slated to return (don't ask me why, when he has two fractured ribs and his team is 0-6, after which no team has ever finished better than 6-10 and all but two were 4-12 or worse), the Rams might be able to do what they've done in five of their last seven games against Seattle: Namely, cover.

DENVER 20 (+3 1/2), Pittsburgh 13 - Jay Cutler is now 1-9 against the spread as a starter, but he's never been a home underdog before and none of those starts have come off a bye week, at which Denver is a league-best 14-4 against the spread (and also 14-4 straight up). The first of two prime-time upsets by home underdogs?

MONDAY NIGHT

JACKSONVILLE 23 (+3), Indianapolis 21 - Silly rabbit, unbeaten records are for Patriots - and for Patriots only!

BEST BETS: DETROIT, KANSAS CITY, DENVER

At least first place is at stake going into the Monday night game this week for a change - and it will be taken by themush if Indianapolis covers.

But should either a Jacksonville cover or a push occur, who will win Week 7?

Don't ask.

Details after the game, as usual.
