Default The Greatest Empire Of All Time

I have much respect for Alexander the Great and what he did with Mesopotamia, but I am going to say that the Nazi Germany Empire was the best ever. As I have said before, the Nazis were the smartest group of people who ever lived, although they used thier intelligence towards evil.

I think I got most of the big Empires, but I know I missed a few that didn't pop in my head this second. Please add some, if you know a big one I missed.

Eh. I missed the French Empire, under Napoleon. Add that one, mods.

Hitler often said that the Third Reich would last a thousand years; it did not even last twenty. I don't see how you can possibly say an "empire" that couldn't keep from being COMPLETELY destroyed and dismantled in less than twenty years is the greatest, or smartest, ever.

My vote goes to whomever lasted the longest and did the most good in a humanitarian and scientfic/artistic advancement sense. Smart = kind if you ask me.

The United States of America is not an empire. It doesn't belong on the list.

With technology growing so fast during that time, Germany did well during that time. They took over most of Europe and almost took over the Soviet Union. They were one battle away from defeating that Soviets, but the Soviets pulled it together at Stalingrad.

I'm not trying to defend Nazi Germany in their quest, but I am sayng that they were smart and took over most of Europe in an age where technology was tripling every year.

I wouldn't say "most of".

They had some allies, which take up space in Eurpoe.

And taking over France doesn't take much (Even then, if i remember correctly from last years world history, didn't Germany actually let France still rule - and by rule I mean look like they were ruling but Germany told them what to do - part of their own country? I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure about this.)

Also, Germany's first few countries that, if you want to say, "took over" were actually given to Germany by liberal apeasers who feared war, but new it was inevitable. What was that Great Britain Prime Minister? Oh yeah, Neville Chamberlain. And he was constantly told by Winston Churchil that appeasing them only makes them greedier and that they won't stop. But no, he didn't listen and it wasn't until September of 1939 (after Germany invaded Poland - because the appeasers finally found out that they were doing wrong and tryed to tell Hitler to stop - without a declaration of war) that war actually happened in Europe.

And I agree with KB on this, less than 20 years isn't enough for a country to be considered an empire.

My vote goes to the Roman Empire...those guys were good.

I see what you are saying, but I disagree with the fact that they were not an empire and the fact that they were not smart, coming from KB.

These guys fooled a whole nation into believing what they said. Yes, Poland and a few other small nations were really theirs and no one cared when Germany took them back.

But the fact that in a world moving so fast, that they fooled everyone, took over many nations, almost took over two of the three allies, and just dominated makes them the greatest empire ever. Britain and Russia were just dominated by the Nazis. It is good thing that both stood strong because the Nazis were powerful and had technology that the world had never seen.

The bottom line is that they dominated, but their three biggest enimies didn't give up. These guys sold their ideas and got people on their side. And the stuff they were telling people was crap. But they still got Germans and other countries to believe it and became the super power of the world, at that time.

But Ellis, We still do live in that technology-changing-faster-than-you-can-blink state, and yet the US has managed to be the strongest country in the world for at least 60 years and counting. (I agree with Ricky that we are not an empire, but I think Ellis is defining it broadly so I understand what he's saying).

We still assisted tremendously with their fall, engaging them in an arms and technology race we knew they could not maintain economically. That's what the cold war is all about.
