Cool Anthony's Week 8 Picks

Last week: 8-5-1. Season totals: 42-57-5, Pct. .428. Best Bets: 4-16-1, Pct. .214.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS 17, Green Bay 14 (+5 1/2) - True, the Packers are 0-4 straight up lifetime against the Jets on the road, but 2-2 against the spread - and of the 19 games Aaron Rodgers has lost as a starter, twelve have been by four points or less or in overtime. He's even 4-2-1 against the line on artificial turf. Take the points.

Denver 20 (+1), San Francisco 16 - Andy Reid may get an apple in his throat every January, but Mike Singletary has a death-rattle in his throat this October. Troy Smith - who can't throw a football more than 20 yards down the field? And instead of subjecting such an important historical ally to this stinker, shouldn't we be forcing it on someone like Hugo Chavez?

Miami 23 (+2 1/2), CINCINNATI 21 - So long as the Dolphins keep winning on the road and losing at home, why not keep picking their games accordingly? They've also won, and covered, five of their last six in the City of Satan.

DETROIT 31, Washington 20 (+1) - When the Giants won Monday night it kept a determinedly mediocre team from sitting atop the NFC East, if only on tie-breakers; and the Redskins aren't even that in fatigue games - 5-11 both ways - and a lot worse than that on rugs and in domes, having dropped seven and four straight respectively. Matthew Stafford makes his return from an opening-day shoulder injury a winning one.

Carolina 16 (+3), ST. LOUIS 14 - The Panthers are 1-5, the Rams 3-4, and the game's in St. Louis. So why's the number so low? Maybe the fact that Carolina has beaten St. Louis four times in a row, the last three by a combined 62-20, has something to do with it.

DALLAS 17, Jacksonville 13 (+6 1/2) - At least the Cowboys showed some pride with those two fourth-quarter touchdown drives, after Wade Phillips showed no brains by eschewing an easy field-goal try that would have brought them back within two scores Monday night - but it's not enough to make me want to lay this kind of wood on a quarterback with an even .400 career winning percentage as a starter (46-69). And if the roof is closed Sunday, there is even less of a reason to do so, as Jacksonville has covered four straight indoors.

KANSAS CITY 26, Buffalo 20 (+8 1/2) - The Chiefs are 4-2. So are the Colts - but you know and I know that this number would be a lot higher if the winless Bills were playing at Indy this week instead of KC. Still, Buffalo has covered in eight of the last ten versus the Chiefs, for whom back-to-back division games (at Oakland, then at Denver) await.

SAN DIEGO 24, Tennessee 17 (+3 1/2) - Shouldn't it be against the law for a team that leads the entire NFL in both total offense and total defense to be 2-5 after seven games? And that 17 points would equal the most the Titans have managed against San Diego in seven games, the last six of which they lost by 102 points (173-71).

NEW ENGLAND 23, Minnesota 10 (+4 1/2) - Of course Brett Favre will start. But will he finish - or, for that matter, even get through the first half? This game misses being reckoned as a cold-weather game for the Vikings by one day - but it doesn't miss being outdoors, where Minnesota is 13-44 straight up and 18-36-3 against the line since a victory at Dallas on Thanksgiving Day of 2000.

Tampa Bay 17 (+3), ARIZONA 9 - Assuming he's cleared to play (concussion last week in Seattle), Max Hall will still be looking to engineer his first NFL touchdown drive, as the three TDs the Cardinals scored in their win over New Orleans three weeks ago came on the returns of two fumbles and an interception. And expecting similar "help" from a Tampa offense that has allowed only one such score all season is not very realistic.

OAKLAND 23, Seattle 20 (+1) - The Raiders might actually snap their "7-11" streak - seven consecutive seasons with eleven or more losses - this year after all. And the home team here has active streaks of nine straight victories, and seven spread covers.

Pittsburgh 24, NEW ORLEANS 14 (+1) - This year's Steelers are an amazing story; this year's Saints, much less so - and Pittsburgh is 3-0-1 against the spread in their four most recent meetings, and 5-2 straight up inside NFL domes since 2005. Works for me.

MONDAY NIGHT

INDIANAPOLIS 30, Houston 27 (+5 1/2) - Only once in their AFC South lives have the Colts been swept by a division rival out of 24 chances, and that was all the way back in 2002, the division's inaugural year (Tennessee did it). But despite their 8-0 lifetime record hosting the Texans, they're just 4-4 against the spread, and are missing too many key pieces on offense to fully exploit Houston's inexplicably league-trailing defense. This one is destined to go down to the final play - and it may even require extra play, as in overtime.

BEST BETS: DETROIT, NEW ENGLAND, TAMPA BAY
