Default Gonzaga does it again!

This time they knocked off #3 Oklahoma State....in Oklahoma City, no less.

So that's two wins over (at the time) top 3 teams, and a win over #16 Washington, along with a blowout loss against #1 Illinois.

I notice that, coming into this game, Gonzaga was #13 in the AP (writers) poll, and #21 (!) the ESPN (coaches) poll. I don't think I've ever seen such a great discrepancy between the two polls, in football or basketball.

We seem to respect the opinions of coaches more than writers when it comes to these things, but this was a big piece of redemption for the writers....who do get to see tons more games than the coaches, who have to focus all their time and energy on their team.

Anyway, bravo, Zags!

The Zags are no longer the team they used to be. I say that because now they have the attention of the country. THey are no longer that 12th ranked team in the tournament who makes it to the Sweet 16. Last year, they were ranked 2 and lost in the Second Round. They've lost the buzz.

They're no longer a "cinderella" team. They are now in the Top 25 year in and year out and have proved this season and in season's past that they are capable of playing with and beating the nation's best teams. While these are extrodinary accomplishments for a small school in Spokane, WA, no one should act surprised at where Gonzaga is right now.

They were the quintessential Cinderella team, as Alex points out, but they are victims of their own success. As a top-tier, well-known team, they are only average.

And then they go and lose to a freakin' 7-5 Mizzou squad.

...on the road, for their second long road trip in four days, with their best player (Turiaf) hobbled by an ankle injury, against a Mizzou team that just played No. 1 Illinois tough and probably had their best shooting night of the season.

If any of you watched that game and saw JP Batista play, he transfered from Barton County Community College, which is on my beat for the paper. (Why are all of my recent posts bringing that up, I feel like Tiger.)

Mizzou always plays Illinois tough in b-ball it is a big rivalry game for them.

I just think it validates Marc and Alex's point a bit. A true contender beats .500 teams on the road.

I think you're underestimating both the difficulity to win on the road in the Big 12, twice in one week, and the kind of non-conference schedule Gonzaga has played.

They've got wins over Ga Tech, Oklahoma State, Washington and the mighty Saint Louis Billikens (a fellow Jesuit foe whose RPI is somewhere around 270). Throw that (horrid) Illini loss in there and the Zags are 3-1 this season against top-15 teams.

And 2-0 against top 5 (at the time) teams, which I'm not sure we will see again this year.

Also, the win against Ok State in OKC was just two nights ago. They're drained, they're on the road, their big guy is hurting, Mizzou had to be extremely, extremely "up" for this game as they are in need of redemption, and the Zags still almost won. I don't think this takes a way from Gonzaga's victories one bit.

Let's hope KU follows suit and hands them their second loss.

Top teams lose to 7-5 teams on the road in regular season competition. I'd write more about Gonzaga, but just got done writing a column for SC about them and how they've grown from a team capable of knocking off a top team to a team capable of playing with the top teams consistenly. Anyway, specifically on the Mizzou game, here's what I put in the column, no need to re-write it...

It means that they can find themselves in a dog fight at Missouri in late December. It means that they can lose that game against Missouri, one that came down to a desperation three point heave, and learn from it. Gonzaga didn’t need to defeat Missouri to gain a measure of respect on a National stage. They’re already there.
