Default Out of Conference Play...

Lookin' over the out of conference schedule for each conference. Who got it tough? Who got it easy?

First up...

Big Ten

Normally the strongest or 2nd strongest BCS conference in terms of scheduling quality out of conference opponents... 2007 finds a down year for the Big Ten.

The skinny...

11 teams...44 non-conference opponents

Number of I-AA opponents: 8

Games vs. "Quality" opponents (BCS teams that finished atleast .500 last year or non-BCS teams that went bowling)

HOME

Pittsburgh (6-6) Aat Michigan State
Western Michigan (8-5) at Iowa
Oregon (7-6) at Michigan
Notre Dame (10-3) at Michigan
Nevada (8-5) at Northwestern
Notre Dame (10-3) at Penn State
Central Michigan (10-4) at Purdue
Notre Dame (10-3) at Purdue
Washington State (6-6) at Wisconsin

ROAD

Indiana at Western Michigan (8-5)
Michigan State at Notre Dame (10-3)

NEUTRAL

Missouri (8-5) vs. Illinois (St. Louis)

Final analysis:

Only 12 "quality" opponents this year for the Big Ten. 9 at home, 2 on the road, and 1 neutral. I haven't looked over the rest of the BCS conferences but this will most likely qualify as the WORST non-conference scheduling of the bunch. Pathetic and outrageous.

Next conference...SEC.

Of course I read what you wrote and if you give the Big Ten that bad of a rating I can only imagine what you are going to give the SEC.

SEC

Total non-conf games...48

Games vs. I-AA...10

Games vs. "Quality" opponents (BCS teams that finished atleast .500 last year or non-BCS teams that went bowling)

HOME

Mid Tenn. (7-6) at LSU
Kansas State (7-6) at Auburn
Oklahoma State (7-6) at Georgia
Troy (8-5) at Arkansas
Missouri (8-5) at Ole Miss
South Florida (9-4) at Auburn
Virginia Tech (10-3) at LSU
Troy (8-5) at Florida
L'Ville ( 12-1) at Kentucky
Houston (10-3) at Alabama
Troy (8-5) at Georgia
Florida State (7-6) at Florida
Wake Forest (11-3) at Vanderbilt
Clemson (8-5) at South Carolina
Southern Miss. (9-5) at Tennessee

ROAD

Tennessee at California (10-3)
Miss State at West Virginia (11-2)
Georgia at Georgia Tech (10-3)

NEUTRAL

Alabama vs. Florida State (7-6)

RECAP:

15 at home
3 on the road
1 neutral

Like to see more on the road/outside the South but on paper at this point...it's very clear the SEC has a tougher road than the Big Ten.

Next up...Big Twelve

I'm just hoping USF goes into Auburn and takes care of business.

You never know. They have the QB and D to pull an upset. It'll be tough going to Jordan-Hare though.

I'm sure you were pleased that I put Troy as a "quality opponent." They were 8-5 last year and won the SBC. Plus they have been known to scare a few big boys in the last 2 or 3 years.

2004
Troy 24 Missouri 14
South Carolina 17 Troy 7
LSU 24 Troy 20

2006
Florida State 24 Troy 17
GA Tech 35 Troy 20

They did lose 56-0 to Nebraska last year but that was after playing FSU and GA Tech close for consecutive weeks. I suspect they'll give Arkansas a game and then get dismantled against Florida.

Big Twelve coming tomorrow...

They had LSU. I'm trying to remember what happened, and how LSU pulled it out, but for the life of me I can't remember.

Unless someone wants me to go thru the rest of the conferences I think I'm gonna stop here and just put my charts up.

Ok...here we go.

* A "quality team" is a BCS team that finished atleast .500 in 2006 or a non-BCS team that went bowling

% OF TOTAL NON-CONF GAMES PLAYED VS. I-AA TEAMS

1. Pac Ten...3%
2. Big East...13%
3. ACC...15%
4. Big Twelve..17%
5. Big Ten...18%
6. SEC...21%

% OF "QUALITY GAMES" FROM TOTAL NO. OF NON-CONF GAMES

1. Pac Ten...55%
2. ACC...50%
3. SEC...40%
4. Big Twelve...37%
5. Big East...28%
6. Big Ten...27%

% OF "QUALITY GAMES" FROM TOTAL NO. OF NON-CONF GAMES THAT ARE PLAYED ON THE ROAD

1. ACC...27%
2. Pac Ten...26%
3. Big Twelve...19%
4. Big East...10%
5. SEC...7%
6. Big Ten...5%

So 3 basic categories.

We add 'em up and the lowest score wins (best job of scheduling). For instance, the Pac Ten finished #1, #1, and #2 so that equals 4 (1+1+2=4).

1. Pac Ten...4
2. ACC...6
3. Big East...11
4. Big Twelve...12
5. SEC...14
6. Big Ten...17

Pac Ten...#1

The Pac Ten has to play out of conference... because it's a weak conference. Who fears the Stanford Cardinal? They are freaking tree for God sakes.
