Default ECU as a mythical national title contender?

Ranked #14 in the AP poll (not affiliated with the BCS) and #20 in the Coaches’ Poll…does ECU have a shot at the MNC?

Remaining schedule…

AT Tulane

AT NC State

Houston

AT Virginia

Memphis

AT UCF

Marshall

AT Southern Miss

AT UAB

UTEP

*******************************************

If they run the table and everyone else has one-loss...do they get in the MNC game?

With their two toughest opponents out of the way in Va Tech and WVU and a rather mediocre schedule the rest of the way they definitely have a legit shot at running the table. Whether or not they get into the BCS Championship game may depend on how much Va Tech and WVU help them out in the computer rankings. They may need those two schools to bounce back and win 10 games to strengthen their schedule rating.

OSU is going to lose 2...probably 3....games.

Unless you mean Oklahoma State.

It was a joke. No way does ECU even sniff the MNCG.

The SOS is going to be a problem...as D somewhat touched on.

The ACC and Big East are so bad this year...and I mean so bad...that I honestly believe that may cost them cuz their non-conf games are coming against those teams.

I think a lot of it will depend on what WVU and Virginia Tech do. If ECU runs the table and those two teams come back strong, then ECUs strength of schedule looks quite a bit stronger. If it turns out WVU and Va. Tech were in rebuilding years and weak this season, then I think that will bring ECU down a decent amount.

I agree, ECU's only prayer is if Va Tech and WVU don't lose the rest of the season, which seems highly unlikely despite the fact that they play in **** leagues. On the other hand, the Pirates look good for a BCS bid provided they don't stumble along the way. The rest of C-USA is far from daunting so it's a strong possibility. Really, looking at the league there isn't a team or two like Boise State (Fresno State and Hawaii) and Hawaii (Boise State and Fresno State) had to really worry about. As long as they don't look too far ahead they should be fine as Virginia and NC State have already proven they're not very good.

The one team left on the schedule that ECU fans are worried about is the November 2 trip down to UCF.

They are playing @ NC State, the same NC State who dusted them last season. And ask South Florida how tough UCF is at home. That stadium was literally shaking Saturday night.

It's one thing to get up for a game in which you are the underdog, now that they are the ones w/the target on their back, we'll see how they do.

Meh, I don't anticipate State giving ECU much of a challenge. Their guys are dropping like flies due to injury right now and they are going to have their 3rd different starting QB of the year. I know they beat them last year but ECU is simply playing with so much more confidence this year than last.

The only way this game is a contest is if ECU suffers a let down and starts turning the ball over and committing stupid penalties.

I agree.

As the hype builds let's see 'em win some games.

I wish I could find it somewhere (and feel free to look SCers) but I was wondering if there has ever been a team in the history of the AP poll (dating back to 1936) that was ranked #14 or higher after 1/6 of the season (2 of 12 games) and didn't win the MNC from the AP when and if every team ahead of them lost.

Simply put, has a team ever ranked this high in the early season NOT won the MNC in a poll when every team ranked ahead of them lost?

Cuz realistically, every team ahead of them is capable of losing. Hell, I didn't even calculate all the teams that have to play head-to-head that our above ECU right now.

ECU is starting to get hit with some key injuries. They lost one of their top defensive players for the season in MLB Quentin Cotton and starting left tackle Stanly Bryant will not be available against NC State on Saturday.
