Twinkies get slimmed down

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Hostess Twinkies are becoming the latest product remade and repackaged into 100-calorie snack packs, a product some analysts say could do well given that more people are packing their own lunches in the slumping economy.

The maker of the golden yellow, creme-filled cake is launching "Twinkie Bites" nationwide in stores on Monday. It's also introducing a snack pack featuring strawberry cupcakes as it extends the 100-calorie pack line originally aimed at women who wanted to snack more sensibly.

Hostess launched its 100 calorie cupcakes in 2007 but held off on making a version of the Twinkie because the product was a favorite overall, not just among those looking for low-cal options, said David Leavitt, vice president of snack marketing at Hostess owner Interstate Bakeries Corp. Some 500 million Twinkies are sold every year.

And while Leavitt notes that the original Twinkie come in at 150 calories, people asked for a lightened version and the company got to work. They didn't want to just shrink the Twinkie, known for its elongated shape, Leavitt said, so they created three, miniature round versions. Leavitt said people enjoy having multiple bites rather than just the one product.

"It's not some impostor like some portion control products would be," Leavitt said. "From that standpoint it eats like a Twinkie, it smells like a Twinkie, it tastes like a Twinkie."

**********************************************************

WTF?

Who are these people that asked for "diet" Twinkies?

If you got extra junk in the trunk eat some carrots for the love of God.

And just because they are now 100-calories instead of 150 doesn't mean they're still good for you. Instead of eating 2 at 150 (300) people will just eat 3 at 100 (300).

And what in the hell does this line mean...

It's also introducing a snack pack featuring strawberry cupcakes as it extends the 100-calorie pack line originally aimed at women who wanted to snack more sensibly.

Nobody at Hostess must be married or plan on getting laid soon cuz what you're basically saying is that chicks need to get their diet on.

A true WTF story here...

Police: 90-year-old living with 3 siblings' bodies
Neighbors say woman was alert and aware; one body dead since '80s

EVANSTON, Ill. - A 90-year-old woman well-liked by her neighbors apparently has been living in a house with the bodies of three siblings, one of whom may have been dead since the early 1980s, police say.

Police Cmdr. Tom Guenther says the bodies were found Friday in Evanston, a Chicago suburb, after authorities were called by a senior advocate.

The woman was taken to a hospital for observation. Her identity was not released.

Neighbors described the woman as alert and aware, and said she was well liked on their close-knit block of large, historic homes. She enjoyed gardening and shared her plants with others, they said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the dead as Anita Bernstorff, who was last seen alive in May 2008, Frank Bernstorff, not seen alive since 2003, and Elaine Bernstorff, who was last seen alive in the early 1980s.

Anita Bernstorff was the eldest, born in 1910.

Cops: Mom marks birthday with son in heists
37-year-old's baby, two boys rode along during robberies, police say

MILWAUKEE - A woman celebrated her birthday by helping her teenage son rob two gas stations, police in Wisconsin said.

The 37-year-old woman acted as the getaway driver while her 17-year-old son robbed the stations at gunpoint, said officers in the Milwaukee suburb of Greenfield. ...

The teen was visiting from Chicago for his mother's birthday, police said.

The woman's 13-month-old daughter and two boys, ages 10 and 14, also rode along during the robberies in Greenfield and Milwaukee, police said.

Priest: Slain dad taught boy, 8, how to use guns
Police say Arizona child used a rifle to shoot his father and another man

ST. JOHNS, Ariz. - A man who police believe was shot and killed by his 8-year-old son had consulted a Roman Catholic priest about whether the boy should have a gun and had taught him how to use firearms, the clergyman said Saturday.

The Rev. John Paul Sauter said the father, Vincent Romero, 29, wanted his son to learn how to hunt, while the boy's stepmother, Tiffany, suggested he have a BB gun.

Police say the boy used a 22.-caliber rifle Wednesday to kill his father and another man, Timothy Romans, 39, of San Carlos.

Romero was an avid hunter who taught his son how to use a rifle to kill prairie dogs, said Sauter, of St. Johns Catholic Church.

"He wanted to make sure the kid wasn't afraid of guns, knew how to handle it," the priest said. "He was just too young. ... That child, I don't think he knows what he did, and it was brutal."

The boy, who faces two counts of premeditated murder, did not act on the spur of the moment, St. Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick said.

"I'm not accusing anybody of anything at this point," he said Saturday. "But we're certainly going to look at the abuse part of this. He's 8 years old. He just doesn't decide one day that he's going to shoot his father and shoot his father's friend for no reason. Something led up to this." ...

In a sign of the emotional and legal complexities of the case, police are pushing to have the boy tried as an adult even as they investigate possible abuse, Melnick said. If convicted as a minor, the boy could be sent to juvenile detention until he turns 18.

Police had responded to calls of domestic violence at the Romero home in the past, but authorities were searching records Saturday to determine when those calls were placed, Melnick said....

Earlier this year in Arizona, prosecutors in Cochise County filed first-degree murder charges against a 12-year-old boy accused of killing his mother.

Milwaukee seems to be a real 'active' place...

excerpt:

Man Kills Wife, Is Shot Dead By His Son

MILWAUKEE - Police say an estranged husband, broke into his wife’s home and started stabbing her numerous times early Monday. It happened about 5 a.m. at the corner of 19th and Euclid on Milwaukee's south side. The couple's 23-year-old son, who lives there, walked in and saw his father stabbing his mother. He grabbed a gun and shot his dad. But the 55-year-old father kept stabbing the woman so the son shot his dad again. The dad died at the scene from the gunshot wounds. The mother died later at the hospital from the stab wounds. She’s 49. The son has been released from custody because police believe this was acting in self defense to save his mother. Police have not released the name of the family.

Talk about 'gun control'.

Monks brawl at Christian holy site in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM - Israeli police rushed into one of Christianity's holiest churches Sunday and arrested two clergyman after an argument between monks erupted into a brawl next to the site of Jesus' tomb.

The clash between Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks broke out in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, revered as the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

The brawling began during a procession of Armenian clergymen commemorating the 4th-century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus.

The Greeks objected to the march without one of their monks present, fearing that otherwise, the procession would subvert their own claim to the Edicule — the ancient structure built on what is believed to be the tomb of Jesus — and give the Armenians a claim to the site.

The Armenians refused, and when they tried to march the Greek Orthodox monks blocked their way, sparking the brawl.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police were forced to intervene after fighting was reported. They arrested two monks, one from each side, he said.

A bearded Armenian monk in a red-and-pink robe and a black-clad Greek Orthodox monk with a bloody gash on his forehead were both taken away in handcuffs after scuffling with dozens of riot police.

The feud is only one of a bewildering array of rivalries among churchmen in the Holy Sepulcher.

The Israeli government has long wanted to build a fire exit in the church, which regularly fills with thousands of pilgrims and has only one main door, but the sects cannot agree where the exit will be built.

A ladder placed on a ledge over the entrance sometime in the 19th century has remained there ever since because of a dispute over who has the authority to take it down.

More recently, a spat between Ethiopian and Coptic Christians is delaying badly needed renovations to a rooftop monastery that engineers say could collapse.
