Default Joaquin Phoenix ... truly insane or an act?

Joaquin Phoenix leaps into crowd at hip-hop show

By LISA ORKIN EMMANUEL

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Joaquin Phoenix appears to be getting into the act of being a petulant hip-hop star.

He jumped off the stage during a short performance at the LIV nightclub early Thursday morning and confronted an audience member who was heckling him. Security guards dragged him back on stage and escorted him away.

It's unknown whether the confrontation - and his pledge to quit acting and start rapping - was real or a put-on, but actor Casey Affleck recorded the performance on camera.

It started with his appearance on Letterman, just strange and awkward. But it's carried on and now the actor is trying to be a rap star (what?). Is this all an act or is this guy drugged up and off his rocker? I honestly don't know, but it's really odd. Why would he be doing this and to what benefit for him? I don't get it.

He went from playing Johnny Cash to Amish guy...

As I posted in the "Sure got quiet" thread...

It's all a pretty poor, Andy Kaufman-style act. Although David Letterman played into it very well (whether he was in on the joke or not).

A stunt like this just can't work in the internet age. I mean, Casey Affleck is following Phoenix around making a documentary of his wild antics performing hip hops songs in various bars around the country that usually conclude with Joaquin falling off the stage.

Funny and a little puzzling the first time? Maybe. When it consistently happens with a camera crew tailing you, it certainly loses its impact.

As Joaquin Phoenix's Two Lovers costar, Gwyneth Paltrow must have some sort of insight into what is going on with the struggling rapper/star of Casey Affleck's eventual documentary. And just like the rest of us, she's not sure if he's forreal, but she highly doubts it.

"I think that there might be some other explanation or something going on," she told MTV U.K. "I'm not quite sure what, but I can't believe that he's really going to quit forever to become a rapper. It seems...odd."

But just because she doesn't know what's going on with him doesn't mean she can't bestow a little GOOP wisdom upon poor, misguided Joaquin.

"What advice would I give to Joaquin? Hmmm...maybe to go live in the projects for a few years to get some authenticity, maybe."

That Gwyneth, she always knows the best place to get anything, whether it's a contemporary midcentury sink or a little street cred.
I would love to see that added to Casey Affleck's documentary. Although, I think Sacha Baron Cohen already beat Joaquin to the punch and delivered beautifully.

I think he's talking about the Ali G show in general. I mean Cohen's whole thing is taking on a persona to offend or make people uncomfortable.
