Default Math Gods?

Just wondering if there's any "math gods" on these boards. I wrote the 2002 Decartes Math Contest today, an internatally-known math contest open to anyone, but one that the University of Waterloo specifically uses to rank prospective first year students.

I'm wondering 'cuz I know that someone once said that they had a PHD in Math or something on these boards, but I forget who it was. . . . just wanted to ask a question or two about the exam that I had 'cuz there's some questions I want answered

I don't know about math god, but I do like Math, and I really adept at it. I've taken home many math contests in SE Montana and have placed first on the American Math Competition.

Ok well..... if you have tan2x = -24/7, what is sinx, in the first quadrant???

I know I could figure out using degrees, but can you do it using exact values????

Well if it was tan x, then sin x would be 24/25... but that 2x is tricky...

Yeah, that's how far I've gotten too. I should know how to do that. Actually, it would probably be -24/25 wouldn't it?

Calculus!? This unit is covered in the PREcalculus course in the Manitoba cirriculum

You don't know the double angle trig identities???.... say you assign "2x" to be another variable... say "a", for example.

then tanA=-24/7.... you solve for tanA and then divide your answer by two, to get your X value.

Yeah, I knew that Lee. But you wanted an exact value, and luckily last year in Junior PreCalc and this year in Calc, our teacher gave us a cheat sheet and didn't make us remember those double identities. If I had it right now I could help you out. I try to take Calculus homework home as little as possible, so far this year, I've never taken it home yet.
