Default SCMB NFL Pick'em Contest: Divisonal Playoffs

Alright guys...round 2!

Again, congrats to Marc, Anthony, I OWN THIS, and The J, for advancing out of the Wild Card round.

Everyone will chose who they think will win the game and a combined score for EACH game that will be used as successive tie-breakers. ANYONE is welcome to make selections, but only people in the tourney are allowed to win the championship. But it could be fun to say you did better than the champion.

The matchups this week:

Saturday, Jan. 11
Steelers at Titans, 4:30 p.m.
Falcons at Eagles, 8 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 12
49ers at Buccaneers, 1 p.m.
Jets at Raiders, 4:30 p.m.

Tie-breaker order: Falcons at Eagles, 49ers at Buccaneers, Jets and Raiders, Steelers at Titans.

Good luck everyone, and remember...pick a combined score from all 4 games!

Default My Upset Picks for this NFL weekend

Atlanta to upset the Eagles

Reason:Eagles have not faced an explosive QB like Vick all season

Jets to beat Oakland

Reason:Raiders have no pass defense

Atlanta 20 Philadelphia 13

Jets 34 Raiders 14

Last week: 3-1. Postseason totals: 3-1-0, Pct. .750. Best Bets: 0-1, Pct. .000.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SATURDAY

TENNESSEE 24, Pittsburgh 17 (+4) - Despite Tommy Maddox earning the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year honors for 2002 and wide receiver Plaxico Burress following up last season's four-digit receiving-yardage performance with another, the Steelers are still a run-first team - and running on Tennessee's defense won't be easy; it was second against the rush during the regular season. For the Titans, Steve McNair has made a pretty impressive comeback of his own - and the injury to Pittsburgh free saftey Mike Logan could open up some opportunities for Tennessee through the air here. All in all, there appears to be more in the home team's favor, so that's the way to go versus the modest number.

PHILADELPHIA 27, Atlanta 13 (+7 1/2) - ABC and/or ESPN must be drooling over the presence of a Falcons/Eagles game (at Atlanta) on next year's regular-season schedule, for the Mike Vick-Donovan McNabb matchup is certified prime-time material. But now it turns out that Fox will get there first. Expecting the Falcons to win back-to-back cold-weather night games after backing into the playoffs is asking an awful lot - especially given Andy Reid's spotless 9-0 record both straight up and against the spread under the lights. Moreover, the fact that the Eagles lost their season finale makes the task even more difficult for Atlanta: Philadelphia last lost two in a row (in the same season) in Weeks 2 and 3 of 2000, and since then is 11-0 outright and 8-3 against the spread coming off a loss, outscoring those eleven opponents 284-132, or by nearly two touchdowns per game. Under Reid, the Eagles are also 4-0 straight up and 3-1 versus the points following a bye week, the lone non-cover coming two years ago facing an opponent against whom they have never covered the spread in nine lifetime meetings (Cincinnati). Philly's agile defense figures to contain Vick, while Duce Staley should be able to trump Atlanta's 23rd-ranked run defense. It's been 22 years since an NFC number one seed has lost a divisional playoff game in a non-strike year (and no sixth seed has ever won one, in either conference), and won't lose this one either.

SUNDAY

TAMPA BAY 16, San Francisco 14 (+4 1/2) - Officially, Brad Johnson is healthy - he's not even on the injury report as a probable - but don't expect him to be 100 per cent for this game. And if he's much less than that, the Bucs are in big trouble: In his absence the last two games, Tampa Bay scored only one touchdown, and that was in the final minute and 14 seconds against Pittsburgh when the victory was clearly out of reach. The Buccaneers lack the deep speed at wide receiver to take advantage of San Fran's shaky secondary, and their running game has been a virtual non-issue all season. Tampa Bay will need one of its better defensive efforts to thwart Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens, but even if that happens the favorite is a bad risk giving the points in this spot.

OAKLAND 45, N.Y. Jets 34 (+5 1/2) - Still not convinced that the Jets have a championship-caliber defense, as Peyton Manning has a history of postseason choking that goes back to his college days. This one has all the makings of a wild shootout, and Rich Gannon's vast experience edge over Chad Pennington should come in handy here. The Jets have won in Oakland only once since 1962, and that was in last year's regular-season finale, when they needed a win to make the playoffs while the Raiders were already in. There's no telling how far Pennington will eventually take the Jets; it just won't be to this year's AFC championship game.

BEST BET: PHILADELPHIA
