Default Taking it to the Next Level?

It's hard to see how Joe Mauer can get any better, but he probably will.

I think J.D. Drew will excel in Boston batting fifth.

I think being a catcher, it'll catch up to Mauer eventually.

J.D. Drew will benefit batting behind Manny and Ortiz no doubt. Only question, is will he be on the field most of the year?

You can say the same thing about Brian McCann, but that should be years down the road.

The Twins are using Mauer as a DH occasionally to save his knees. McCann does not have that opportunity.
Mauer will have more extra-base hits as he matures. He is only 23 now and his body is still that of a "kid". As he gets older, he will be stronger and hit for more power.
A guy that I think is ready for a "break-out" season is Chris Duffy of the Pirates. He could steal 60+ bases if he learns to take walks occasionally.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Johnny Gomes take a run at 50 HR's.

If he doesn't hit a bit better, he may not get enough ABs to do that. His .246 BA and .313 OBP doesn't scare a lot of pitchers. Yes he can hit mistakes out of the park, but can he hit a "pitcher's pitch"?
He could develop into a very good hitter, but he needs to be more selective and not swing at so many bad pitches.
Ron Gardenhire's son Toby (likely going to play at AA this season for the Twins) called him and asked how to hit a slider in the dirt. Ron said "I'm going to hang up now. Call me back when you've thought that over." About 5 minutes later, Toby called back and said "You don't swing at the slider in the dirt, do you?". Ron said "You're getting there."
