Default Defensive Players

When I think of all the greats Walter Payton, Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Dick Butkus, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Jerry Rice, Steve Largent, Paul Warfield, Lawrence Taylor, Joe Greene, Reggie White, Ken Houston....Jack Ham still has a special place for me as favorite player. He was perfect. He diagnosed and stopped plays with an uncanny ability. I never saw him miss a tackle or get fooled, he played the pass as well as any starting safety in the NFL today. Teams used to run plays away from him even though Andy Russell and Jack Lambert were the other Steeler LBs at that time. He didn't blitz like Taylor, but then again no one could rush a QB like Lawrence. However Jack Ham never got burned and was the most complete linebacker ever to play the game. He was a run stopper, blitzer, man coverage backer (he could hang with nearly any tight end in the league one on one), and he was amazing in zone coverage. The offensive counterpart to Jack Ham would be Walter Payton. He could do it all, run with moves, run with power, he was an incredible blocker and he could run pass patterns and catch. He was the perfect offensive player and Jack Ham was the perfect defensive player.

Walter Payton. I read a biography on him a few years ago, and I'm sad I never got to watch him play in the NFL. As for current players, it's Curtis Martin.

Past: "Sweetness" W. Payton, I'll never forget watching him play the Bucs twice a year.

Present: Warrick Dunn, charcter is everything and this guy is loaded with it. And he's not bad on the field either.

This thread was started in July? I missed it.

I'd say...
1. Jim Brown
2. Earl Campbell (these 2 based soley on highlights-- i'm too young)
3. Barry Sanders
4. Mike McKenzie
5. Jack Youngblood (another highlights guy for me)
6. Steve McNair
7. Chuck Cecil
8. Kerry Collins
9. Tim Couch
10. Mike Wahle

...okay, way more than 1, but you got me going... i'm sure i'd answer differently on a different day too. I love football

Mike McKenzie? How can he be a favorite of yours? He not only got his ass kicked by the Packers last weekend, but he ditched the team for more money and ended up being a selfish prick. Maybe now that he's making bank with the Saints, he can afford a haircut. No, I'm not bitter...

Maybe I should've said "Mike McKenzie-- 2000-2003" or something. I loved him then. Not a big fan of the ugly split with the Packers. He was so fun to watch back in the day-- smart, tough, aggressive, played his heart out. It's like Charles Oakley-- don't tell me about the Raptors years, they never happened!

My favorite would have to be Jerry Rice, the greatest player in NFL history........Joe Montana, the greatest QB in NFL history is a close second, and Brett Favre, the toughest QB/Player of all-time, is third.
