First, my straight-up picks:

Cincinnati
Minnesota
Miami
San Diego
Tennessee
Kansas City
Buffalo
Tampa Bay
Carolina
St. Louis (55)

Now, my spread picks:

Last week: 7-7. Season totals: 21-22-0, Pct. .488. Best Bets: 4-5, Pct. .444.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 28, Washington 7 (+14) - Wonder how long it will be before Daniel Snyder does the same thing to Marty Schottenheimer that Schottenheimer did to Jeff George?

BUFFALO 16 (+4 1/2), N.Y. Jets 13 - Because they lost to San Francisco the Jets are essentially assured of a losing season, in that the 49ers have lost 15 in a row to teams finishing .500 or better, assuming this year's Rams fit into that category - hardly a dangerous assumption. So that means the Jets have to lose at least seven of their remaining 13 games, giving the Bills no worse than a 54 per cent chance of winning this game outright - plus you're getting four and a half points.

PHILADELPHIA 27, Arizona 7 (+14 1/2) - Normally shy away from giving this many points on a team with such obvious limitations on offense, but not only is Arizona's current eleven-game road losing streak the NFL's longest, but the Cardinals have been outscored by 230 points in those eleven games and have covered in only one of them. Also, the Eagles have covered the last four games in this series, including 33-14 and 34-9 victories last year.

MIAMI 17, New England 0 (+10) - Last week the Dolphins had to deal with Kurt Warner; here they take on Tom Brady. Talk about taking a steep drop in company!

ATLANTA 20, Chicago 10 (+3) - Jamal Anderson is out for the season and Michael Vick might not play again this week, but the Falcons won't even need either of them to handle a Bears team that is so deficient in quarterback talent that Jeff George would represent a major upgrade for them.

Cincinnati 17 (+6 1/2), PITTSBURGH 16 - As recently as two years ago Jon Kitna was in Hawaii on the first Sunday in February, if you know what I mean. Kordell Stewart is so bad the league should make him spend that same week each year in Alaska! Moral of the story: If you bet on the team with the better quarterback every time it is the underdog, I guarantee that your final ledger in these games will show more profits than losses.

San Diego 19, CLEVELAND 10 (+3) - Not sure the Chargers satisfy the criteria for designation as a good football team, but if you missed Cleveland's "wedding" in Jacksonville last week you may want to miss the funeral as well.

Tennessee 13 (+4 1/2), BALTIMORE 12 - It will be profoundly difficult for the Titans to make the playoffs if they lose this one, as only 6 per cent of all 0-3 starters since 1990 have done so. And the Ravens are 3-8 straight up in fatigue games (for those of you in Rio Linda and West Palm Beach, that means they didn't have a bye last week but their opponents did).

Minnesota 24 (+4 1/2), NEW ORLEANS 17 - Until proven otherwise, I'm marking the Saints down as sure losers whenever they play a good team.

TAMPA BAY 21, Green Bay 10 (+3) - Nobody is good enough to run away with the NFC Central and the home team has won seven straight of these "Bay" games. Even with Warrick Dunn out, this still shapes up as a tougher test for Mike Sherman's defense than Detroit, Washington or Carolina provided.

Kansas City 23 (+10 1/2), DENVER 20 - What can I say? The Chiefs simply have Denver's number, with four consecutive outright upsets over the Broncos and five straight covers against them. Big balloons!

OAKLAND 27, Dallas 10 (+19) - White jerseys are like a security blanket for Dallas, and the Raiders feel the same way about their black jerseys - and both teams get to wear those respective colors whenever they play each other, no matter who's at home. Maybe that has something to do with why the visiting team is seven out of seven covering the spread lifetime in this series, and believe it or not the Cowboys haven't played that badly on defense so far this year. So if they can avoid the kind of stupid mistakes that proved so costly last Sunday night, they have a good shot at keeping this game within a number that is much too big to be laying this early in the season.

Jacksonville 17, SEATTLE 7 (+3*) - The Raiders knocked both Matt Hasselbeck and Trent Dilfer out of their laugher over Seattle last week, so Brock Huard had to finish the game. At the rate they're going, by the end of the month the Seahawks will be down to Kenny G!

Carolina 31 (+5 1/2), SAN FRANCISCO 21 - Greenland will become the world's number one exporter of tropical fruit before George Seifert loses a game to his former team! Seifert is 4-0 versus them both straight up and against the spread, with the Panthers also having covered in the last seven meetings.

MONDAY NIGHT

St. Louis 38, DETROIT 17 (+10) - While I'm still not convinced that the Rams are for real on defense, they have already shown they can stop the league's lesser offenses and the Lions are hobbled by injuries in the secondary - the worst possible place to be hurting when you're facing Kurt Warner and his receivers.

BEST BETS: TAMPA BAY, KANSAS CITY, CAROLINA

*Jacksonville at Seattle is in a circle because Jaguars QB Mark Brunell is questionable and numerous injuries to the Seahawks, including QBs Matt Hasselbeck and Trent Dilfer (both questionable) and RB Ricky Watters (out).
