Default Veritek, Red Sox Agree to One Year Deal

Though getting to this point was far from easy for both sides, the captain is staying put. The Red Sox and free-agent catcher Jason Varitek have agreed on a contract, multiple sources confirmed to MLB.com on Friday.
The deal is for one year, at $5 million, with an option for 2010 that Boston could activate at $5 million or Varitek could at $3 million.

Varitek could make another $2 million in 2010 through incentive clauses if he exercises the option and not the Red Sox, the Boston Globe reported. That means that the total value of the contract will be as low as $8 million or as high as $10 million.

I can't believe it took this long for the Sox & The Captain to get this deal done - I know Veritek had an off year last season and he's getting older, but he is the leader of this club, and they should've taken care of this sooner.

He didn't just have an off year last season, he has been declining the last three seasons. It's a gamble at $5mill and it probably took this long to get the deal done because they were, rightfully, considering their options on cutting ties with him.

Also, do not forget that his agent is Scott Boras and nothing is ever easy when negotiating with him. I am sure Boras was probably claiming he had three other teams on the other line willing to offer Varitek a 3 or 4 year deal worth 8 to 10 per year.

It was rumored that Varitek wanted a deal similar to the one Posada got from the Yanks and I am sure the Sox were very wary of doing something similar given the Yanks are now stuck with a multi-year deal with a player they are not sure is ever going to be a full-time player at the major league level again.

This is a case where the player clearly is better off with a 1-year contract. If he plays well, he gets paid next off-season. If he plays poorly, it didn't cost his team too much.
Jason Varitek is still a "name" player with a big reputation. He is still the face of the Boston franchise, in many people's eyes. Seeing him in another uniform would not have been right, IMO.

Good to see Varitek sticking with his team, but it's just another declining veteran hanging on, a la Bernie Williams in NY. Their name becomes bigger than their production.

I don't know. Varitek brings so much more to the table than what he does at the plate though. Just about everyone in the baseball media believes he is going to be a major league manager one day if he wants to be. It is pretty much still his clubhouse in Boston which goes a long way over the grind of a six-plus month season. He is the glue that keeps the team together and that can be tough to replace.
