Default Best Way to Stay Warm Outdoors?

Man is always trying to stay warm in cold winters. Does anyone have any good suggestions for staying warm outdoors during the winter? New ideas!

Now I live in Mobile and our winters are mild compared to people who might live in Iowa or so forth, but it is a wet cold down here. Today it is 40 degrees at 9:00AM, but the wind is blowing from the north at 20MPH. So its cold.

I've always been told to where many layers of clothes. But the wind still cuts through you.

I lived in Des Moines, Iowa in 2003 and part of 2004 and man what cold.

I guess the point of this post is to see if anyone knows about any new clothing that u can buy that really helps keep u warm in the bitter cold.

Or any new devices that you can have to help keep u warm outdoors.

Has anyone made a so called electric blanket with batteries or something like it that u can wrap around you that transmits heat?

Are there any hats that transmit heat with batteries or any other means?

Forget about the battery-operated hats and chemically-operated hand warmers. What you need is old-school New England common sense! Yes "dressing in layers" is at the center of Buffalo, New York common sense and Down East lore... but the composition of the layers is key! Forget about anything made of nylon. Though it stops the wind and sheds water it has zero warmth potential. Also forget about the newly advertized goretex junk... too expensive... Remember if you try to be stylish you'll freeze to death... take a peak at downtown Buffalo rush hour or visit a White River Junction, Vermont yard sale... you'll see what works in cold weath attire!

Start with a full set of real long johns (top and bottom or one set with drawers)! Learn to wear them frequently (which means daily) and wash them every other day... best to have two sets for the winter. Then add to them wool socks (either dress or casual). Then wear a nice Chamois shirt (I prefer Woolrich brand), with wool-blend pants (your choice). As for jacket try a real Woolrich wool stormer-type with a hood. If it is windy, inside your jacket wear a hoody-brand athletic jersey...that works mighty fine! Then wear a good insulated boot (the old style LL Bean boots work but your choice here...try real Dunham boots if you want warmest). Don't lase up your books tight...wear 'em loose! Btw... a word about LL Bean: most of their crappy stuff now is for urban city dwellers and they have dropped stock among Down East folks... Top off your outfit with a nice wool watch cap (the Massachusetts cod fisherman cap is among the warmest). Find a good set of wool golves to wear... forget about the stylish leather ones! Then be active... wearing the above attire go for a walk each day and improve your blood circulation. Eat some red meat too. Forget about salads! Smoke 'em if you got 'em too!

Lastly if you sweat or perspire heavily you''' need to change your clothes frequently... try a t-shirt inside your long-underwear and change it before venturing out...carry extra dry t-shirts with you and change frequently... dryness is important to warmth!!!

You'll be warm if you follow these suggestions.

Do you work for Woolrich, IntheNet?
This is very good advice. Dress in layers. I don't think long-johns are necessary on the Gulf Coast, but I wear them here when I'm working outside. They are a necessity in Iowa in the winter.

Cover up your head: most of your body heat is lost through it. Dress in layers, avoid direct skin contact with the wind. As you said, it's Alabama, not Alaska, so take it easy. It's cold here in Charlotte now... 39 and raining as I write this. Just nasty.

Move to AZ. It was 87 yesterday and mid 80s for the rest of the week.

Heh. I am envisioning Doug giving a buddy advice when he has been sentenced to several years in jail. "MAN UP AND TAKE IT!"
