Cool Anthony's Week 17 Picks

1

Last week: 11-5. Season totals: 106-125-9, Pct. .460. Best Bets: 23-22-3, Pct. .510.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opning line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SATURDAY NIGHT

New England 30, N.Y. GIANTS 17 (+14 1/2) - So far as "The Strip" is concerned, the Patriots are playing for 11-5, not 16-0 - and this after having started 8-0. Once outright victory is more or less assured, you can expect to see New England's starters streaming toward the sidelines, provided Tom Brady and Randy Moss have taken care of their respective record-breaking business by then.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS 16, Kansas City 13 (+6 1/2) - A horse by the name of Pennington won the first race at Aqueduct Thursday - but he didn't win by six and a half lengths, and there's no reason why the Jets should be favored by six and a half points over a team they trail by a game in the standings.

PHILADELPHIA 14, Buffalo 10 (+7 1/2) - Have to respect Buffalo's defense being 18th in points allowed when it ranks 30th in yards given up - and it's hard to respect the Eagles at home, where they're 1-7-1 against the spread dating back to this same week a year ago.

Seattle 24 (+2), ATLANTA 17 - No doubt a lot of Seattle's first-stringers won't be in there - but are the ones who do play going to intentionally drop Chris Redman's interceptions when he throws them? Can't see the Falcons heroically getting up for this, especially against a team to which they have dropped four straight.

MIAMI 27 (+3), Cincinnati 10 - Bill Parcells has made an immediate impression on the Dolphins players, and the Bengals haven't won in Miami since 1968, going 0-6 by a combined 109 points. This one won't be any closer. Best bet.

Carolina 13, TAMPA BAY 7 (+3) - After everything they've been through this year, the Panthers can get right back to where they finished last season - in second place in the NFC South, if they win and the Saints lose.

CLEVELAND 24, San Francisco 0 (+10) - Let's see what Shaun Hill does on the road, where he will be making his first start after a three-game home stand and six years of warming assorted benches.

CHICAGO 17 (+3), New Orleans 13 - Up until now there has been only one "Triple Witching Hour" game all year. This week there are three of them (a Triple Witching Hour game is one where a domed-stadium team has to play outdoors, on natural grass, and in cold weather, all in the same game). The Saints are 2-8 straight up in such games since 1996, and Bobby Petrino showed more guts than New Orleans did last Sunday against the Eagles.

GREEN BAY 31, Detroit 10 (+3) - Only three teams have ever made it to the Super Bowl after ending a regular season with back-to-back losses, and only one of them won it (Green Bay, in Super Bowl II!). And why settle for 16-0 when you can have 17-0? The Packers are seeking their 17th consecutive home victory over the Lions, who have never won a Triple Witching Hour game during the Millen Administration (0-8).

Jacksonville 14 (+6), HOUSTON 6 - The last time the Texans had a shot at a .500 season, they couldn't even beat a 3-12 team at home (Cleveland, three years ago) - and Houston head coach Gary Kubiak has already declared Matt Schaub (shoulder) out for this game.

WASHINGTON 27, Dallas 13 (+9) - You knew that Dallas couldn't go an entire season without losing at least once in cold weather and/or blue jerseys, didn't you?

Pittsburgh 3, BALTIMORE 0 (+3 1/2) - The Steelers have already been in one 3-0 game this year. With them not having Ben Roethlisberger (hasn't practiced all week) or Willie Parker (out for the season) and the Ravens without Willis McGahee and reduced to Troy Smith at quarterback, why not another?

DENVER 27 (+3), Minnesota 20 - The third Triple Witching Hour game - and the Vikings are 2-16 straight up in their last 18 of those. And while Minnesota's display of gutlessness last week wasn't quite as dazzling as that of the Saints, it was plenty bad enough, and a quick rebound therefrom isn't likely.

ARIZONA 33, St. Louis 30 (+6) - If Arizona's pass defense could make a fantasy hero out of Chris Redman, then surely Marc Bulger can keep the Rams close in this one, particularly with the home team here having lost five in a row.

San Diego 24, OAKLAND 14 (+7 1/2) - But this could be tricky, with Pittsburgh's game being moved into the same time slot; if the Steelers appear headed for defeat, the Chargers wouldn't need a win to secure the third seed in the AFC, and Norv Turner might proceed to remove his starters, jeopardizing San Diego's chances for a sixth straight cover at Oakland and eighth in the last nine meetings regardless of where played.

Tennessee 38, INDIANAPOLIS 16 (+6 1/2) - This was the same score by which the Rams defeated San Francisco to end the 1988 regular season, prompting Phil Simms to level his famous accusation that the 49ers "laid down like dogs." And the Colts play the Browns next year - in Cleveland. Interesting.

BEST BETS: MIAMI, CLEVELAND, GREEN BAY
