Cool Anthony's Week 2 Picks

Last week: 6-10. Season totals: 6-10, Pct. .375. Best Bets: 1-2, Pct. .333.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (oepning line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS
17 (+1), New England 13 - Week 2 and already a team in "must-win" mode, in that a loss would stick the Jets in a hole from which but one team in NFL history has ever extricated themselves, only the 2003 Eagles having reached the playoffs after starting a season with two losses, both at home, in a non-strike year. Rex's boys back up the swagger this time.

ATLANTA 27, Arizona 14 (+7) - Arguably a higher number than the situation warrants, but Matt Ryan is 10-2-1 against the spread lifetime at home when he has both started and finished the game, and has a 94.6 passer rating in that baker's dozen. Arizona offense was brilliant (378 yards gained) but inefficient (only 17 points scored) in initial post-Kurt Warner tilt.

Tampa Bay 16 (+2), CAROLINA 10 - In this case, an injury to one team that turned out to be less serious than originally thought actually helps the other team, as Matt Moore ("mild" concussion) is expected to play after all, giving the Bucs and Josh Freeman a distinct edge at the QB position, when a Jimmy Clausen-Freeman matchup would have been about even.

CLEVELAND 14, Kansas City 6 (+2 1/2) - If Jake Delhomme (ankle) can't go, the arm-strength-challenged - to be "politically correct" about it - Seneca Wallace gets the nod at quarterback for the Browns. But this is likely letdown territory for the Chiefs coming off their rain-aided Monday night upset of San Diego.

Baltimore 20, CINCINNATI 10 (+1) - Bengals offense did very little in Foxboro until the game was clearly out of reach; and if the Ravens go into next week's home opener 2-0, they may never look back in either the AFC North or the chase for the conference's top playoff seed.

Philadelphia 17, DETROIT 6 (+3) - There may now be a quarterback controversy brewing in Philadelphia, but there is no running back controversy - they're all horrible, a fact the 35 yards they collectively accounted for against Green Bay emphatically reinforces. Even so, it will be a miracle if Matthew Stafford plays, and not only are the Eagles 5-0 both ways in their last five over the Lions (with an average win margin of over 16 points), but 11-1 against the spread in their last 12 - and that goes all the way back to 1968.

TENNESSEE 16, Pittsburgh 3 (+6) - No TDs in 60 minutes of regulation play at home facing a defense that will never be confused with that of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. Imagine how little offense Dennis Dixon will generate this week, on the road - where it is always a much rougher row to hoe for quarterbacks of this sort.

GREEN BAY 45, Buffalo 14 (+13 1/2) - Unless the Packers experience some weird letdown in the wake of their first win at Philadelphia in 48 years, this one won't even be close; and it doesn't hurt the cause of those who lay this number that the home team in this series has covered in each of the five most recent renewals, in addition to having won all five straight up.

MINNESOTA 24, Miami 13 (+5 1/2) - After this game and next week hosting Detroit, the Vikings face, in order, the Jets, Cowboys, Packers and Patriots, following a bye in Week 4, so they are in very real danger of becoming irrelevant in a hurry unless they win here; but the home team's lopsided recent domination of this pairing - six straight wins, and 5-0-1 against the line - bodes well for them, as does Miami's shockingly weak showing on offense in the opener at Buffalo, in which Chad Henne averaged a microscopic 8.67 yards per completion in Brandon Marshall's Dolphin debut.

DALLAS 34, Chicago 7 (+9) - How do you gain 463 total yards in a game and not even score 20 points? And the Bears (who did the above against the lowly Lions defense last week) have scored only 24 in their last three at Dallas; meanwhile, the Cowboys put up 75 in those three games.

DENVER 28, Seattle 10 (+3) - The Seahawks beat the 49ers on artificial turf, upon which San Fran is 14-32 since Steve Young's retirement. Big deal! Now they have to go on natural grass, where they've lost six in a row, the last five by a combined 102 points. Best bet at a bargain price.

OAKLAND 20, St. Louis 13 (+3 1/2) - The starting lineup the Raiders sent onto the field in last week's opener at Tennessee averaged 6-foot-4 and 259 pounds. But a team doesn't need to be too big to be able to bully the Rams outdoors, where they've lost ten consecutive games by an average of exactly three TDs per outing (outscored 298-88).

WASHINGTON 24 (+3), Houston 16 - Both Donovan McNabb (91.5 passer rating) and his new team (a matching pair of 16-point wins) have owned the Texans; and if you missed Houston's wedding last week against the Colts, you may want to miss this week's funeral.

SAN DIEGO 31, Jacksonville 14 (+9) - To those who insist that the Chargers weren't hurt by the rain-soaked conditions of Monday night's game because the Chiefs had to play in it too: Kansas City averages 36 inches of rain a year to San Diego's 10, so it is rather obvious who's more accustomed to playing in such elements. And it's hard to get accustomed to David Garrard completing 76 per cent of his passes for three touchdowns and no interceptions as he somehow managed to do last week.

INDIANAPOLIS 34, N.Y. Giants 31 (+5 1/2) - Both Mannings light it up, and the brother whose team has the ball last wins. And with five and a half points to either give or take ...

MONDAY NIGHT

New Orleans
24, SAN FRANCISCO 17 (+4 1/2) - Looks like the mojo is carrying over for both the Saints and their financial backers so to speak, the latter collecting due to a blocked extra point in the season premiere - and they've got three extra days to prepare for this. Alex Smith continues to leave people scratching their heads.

BEST BETS: GREEN BAY, DALLAS, DENVER
