Cool Anthony's Week 11 Picks

Last week: 11-4. Season totals: 73-70-1, Pct. .510. Best Bets: 11-19, Pct. .367.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY NIGHT

Miami
16 (+3 1/2), CAROLINA 13 - Expecting consistency from the Panthers may not be realistic at this point and the Dolphins are a perfect 3-0 both ways against Carolina. If it comes down to a field goal either way at the end, you can't lose if you take the three and a half points.

SUNDAY

Atlanta
23 (+6), N.Y. GIANTS 17 - The home team has lost the last dozen games in this series. But Michael Turner might not play. So what? The Falcons have already beaten the Giants twice at Club Med in this decade without their first-string quarterback (Michael Vick in both cases), and the Giants are 5-15 straight up following a bye week, which is the NFL's second-worst record at doing that - and one of those five wins was over the only team who's worse (Seattle) and was also coming off a bye (last year).

NEW ENGLAND 30, N.Y. Jets 21 (+11) - Rex Ryan hasn't started running his mouth off yet this week - has he?

JACKSONVILLE 23, Buffalo 6 (+9) - The Bills are Perry Fewell's problem now that Dick Jauron was fired Tuesday; and their league-trailing run defense is Maurice Jones-Drew's to feed off Sunday.

New Orleans 30, TAMPA BAY 28 (+11 1/2) - Josh Freeman's first two NFL starts bear an uncanny resemblance to Donovan McNabb's; and just as a horse can be said to be sitting on a win, the Saints are sitting on a loss. Definitely take the points - and stranger things have happened than if the Bucs were to pull this off outright.

DETROIT 17, Cleveland 10 (+3 1/2) - At least you can expect an honest effort from both teams, as neither figures to have much interest in Sam Bradford; and Monday night's result makes this pick easier, as teams that have gotten shut out are 3-15 straight up and 6-12 against the spread in their next game over the last three seasons.

Indianapolis 27 (+1), BALTIMORE 14 - If Joe Flacco ever takes up mixed martial arts, his choice for an entrance song would be an absolute no-brainer: Eric Carmen's All By Myself! The Colts have beaten the Ravens six in a row, the last five by a combined 134-46 - and don't worry about the cold-weather angle, as Peyton Manning has won seven straight therein.

GREEN BAY 30, San Francisco 17 (+5 1/2) - Their one bad apple - at quarterback - is spoiling the whole bunch for the 49ers, who are 2-12 against the spread in their last 14 versus Green Bay, and San Fran is also 4-8-2 against the line since 1998 as a visitor in cold weather.

MINNESOTA 35, Seattle 13 (+11) - The Seahawks once called an indoor venue home (the Kingdome). Guess they haven't retained much from those days, if their 1-8-1 spread record in their last ten inside NFL domes is any guide.

Pittsburgh 27, KANSAS CITY 24 (+10) - Troy Polamalu is "questionable at best" for this game, according to none other than Mike Tomlin - and in the four games Polamalu missed earlier this year the Steelers allowed 22 points per game, in contrast to the 13.8 per game they gave up in the five games he started. And with these two teams having alternated head-to-head victories nine consecutive times (and Pittsburgh having won the last meeting) and this game sandwiched between two key AFC North battles for the Steelers, tabbing KC to run them to a single-digit margin is hardly asking a lot.

DALLAS 21, Washington 17 (+13) - Have you noticed how underdogs have gone 19-9 against the spread the last two weeks? And if you lay this kind of number on the Cowboys, you're putting yourself in a Catch-22 situation: For every 100 passes thrown in the direction of their receivers, they'll catch 22.

Arizona 42, ST. LOUIS 7 (+9 1/2) - The only team to defy the Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx did so because they couldn't help but win the NFC West (Seattle in 2006); and not only have the Cardinals won their last five on the road by 85 points, but also their last five over the Rams by 91, scoring at least 34 points in all five games.

DENVER 13 (+3), San Diego 10 - A rite of passage of sorts for Kyle Orton, in that this line is circled because Orton is questionable due to a sprained left ankle. But regular readers of these lines don't need to be reminded how difficult it is for a team that lost the first meeting at home to a division rival to win the rematch on the road, and the Chargers in this spot scarcely inspire a whole lot confidence as a potential exception to that rule given their 12-20 straight-up record in cold-weather games dating back to 1996.

OAKLAND 15 (+9 1/2), Cincinnati 14 - Before you laugh, remember that this pick comes from the same source that gave you Tampa Bay outright over Green Bay two weeks ago: The Bengals have never - repeat, never - won in Oakland (0-9 lifetime), just as the Eagles hadn't either, and sure enough they lost outright as 13-point favorites in Week 6; and the week after their first win over Pittsburgh, Cincinnati came within seven seconds of tying Cleveland. Big balloons!

CHICAGO 21 (+1), Philadelphia 19 - After USC got plastered 55-21 by Stanford last Saturday, some USC fans offered to trade Pete Carroll for Andy Reid. Jeffrey Lurie ought to take them up on it.

MONDAY NIGHT

Tennessee
30 (+3 1/2), HOUSTON 27 - Who knew that Vince Young had a second act? Bud Adams did - and at age 86 he has become the oldest person ever to be fined by the commissioner's office, a cool quarter-million for flipping that double bird to the Bills near the end of last Sunday's game. Let the Texans prove they can beat any of their AFC South rivals three times in a row - something they've never done in franchise history (having won their last two over the Titans) - before giving points on them to do so. And as is the case with the Thursday night game, if a field goal decides this one at the end ...

BEST BETS: ATLANTA, INDIANAPOLIS, ARIZONA

Well, 3-0 on best bets certainly gave me quite the boost in the standings, didn't it?
