Post Strahan says he won't be with Giants after 2002 season

Could the NFL's defensive player of the year be leaving New York? It is certainly starting to look that way.

All-Pro defensive end Michael Strahan, the league's single-season quarterback sack king, says that negotiations on a deal to keep him with the Giants past next year have ended, and he is adamant that 2002 will be his final season playing in the Meadowlands.

In an exclusive interview with SportsLine.com, Strahan revealed the Giants have pulled their only contract offer to him off the table and he says he will not remain with the team when his current deal expires following the upcoming season.
With a year left on his contract, I don't know what he was thinking revealing his intentions of leaving before he actually can. What's it going to do to his status on the team when they know he wants out of there ASAP? I would have been better for him to wait until the end of the 2002 season to start rumors like this, IMO. If the Giants lose Strahan, it could all go downhill from there. We already saw how overrated they were going into last season.

As a club that is still partially owned by the same family that founded it in 1925, the Giants have always tended to have a "close-to-the-vest" attitude toward player salaries - the contrast between them and the (American League) baseball team across the Hudson couldn't be sharper. So it wouldn't surprise me to see them let Strahan leave - and remember that under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the Giants would receive special "compensatory picks" from the league if he does go and the Giants don't sign a free agent of comparable stature away from somebody else during the same off-season; and in this case, it would be a first-rounder - at least (the maximum under the rules is two #1s, but it could also be a #1 plus a #2 or a #1 plus a #3).

This is getting pretty darn interesting, almost like a soap opera in New York. Teammate Tiki Barber ripped Strahan and called his demands "ridiculous". Then, Strahan fired back, saying he doesn't care what Barver thinks and if he thinks that about him, then Barber has problems. Now, rumors are flying that the Giants have been trying to trade Strahan for a long time. Interesting...

If he does get traded, the Dallas Cowboys would have serious hopes of finishing third in the newly scaled-down NFC East in 2002.

he's a freakin' PUNK ----------- he needs to take advantage of the NFL's dental program and get that huge trench between his front teeth narrowed

Actually he deserves what he's asking for. Even before the advent of the salary cap, the Giants were always a cheap team despite playing in the largest market in the country.

Name me one Giant other player (besides Strahan) that opponents have any real reason to fear, double-team etc. If he leaves, the Giants become instant doormats.

Armstead? He's a good player, but not in the same class. The Giants should do everything to keep him.

Too late for that, Marc. Armstead's already gone - he signed with the Redskins.

As one who values principles over wins and losses I would bench Strahan for the entire season.
