Cool Anthony's Week 12 Picks

Last week: 9-7. Season totals: 82-77-1, Pct. .516. Best Bets: 13-20, Pct. .394.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY

Green Bay
35, DETROIT 0 (+10 1/2) - Did you know when it was that a team last shut out a division rival in both meetings in a season? If your answer was 2002, when Atlanta blanked Carolina 30-0 and then 41-0, go to the head of the class. And with neither Matthew Stafford nor Calvin Johnson likely to suit up here - just as neither did when Green Bay shut out the Lions 26-0 at Lambeau in Week 6? Packers have also covered their last seven against Detroit, and have won them by an average of 15 and change per game.

DALLAS 27, Oakland 0 (+14) - The last five times Bruce Gradkowski has taken more than half his team's snaps in a road game, the result was one touchdown and nine interceptions, along with an 0-5 record both ways by a combined 130 to 26 - and that includes a 38-10 pasting at none other than Dallas, on none other than Thanksgiving Day, when Gradkowski was with Tampa Bay (in 2006). And don't even get me started about how Oakland has lost 14 consecutive games on artificial turf, with a 1-13 spread record therein.

N.Y. Giants 23, DENVER 10 (+5) - Well at least the Broncos will score, even though they won't win or cover. Then again, that's the way it has gone for 12 of the 13 underdogs to have played on Thanksgiving since 2004.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS
16, Carolina 7 (+3) - In all likelihood, this one comes down to who throws more interceptions - Mark Sanchez or Jake Delhomme? Three signs point to it being the latter: The home team's 4-0 lifetime spread record in the series, plus the facts that the Panthers have covered only one of their last five in cold weather, and one of their last seven on the carpet.

PHILADELPHIA 6, Washington 3 (+9) - I'd say the Eagles rediscovered how to win close games just in time, as no way they blow out a red-hot Skins defense that could be even hotter this week with the possible return of Albert Haynesworth. They also snapped an eight-game losing streak on Sunday night with the four-point win at Chicago - the stuff that letdowns are made of? - and their next two games after this one are both on the road, and both against key rivals in the NFC playoff race - the Falcons, then the Giants. Only two kinds of people will find this game at all bearable: The most jaded Eagle fans, and those who take the points with Washington and/or the under.

Miami 20, BUFFALO 7 (+3) - Tony Sparano is 5-0 against the spread in cold weather and it's hard to see Buffalo's limited offense being able to keep up with what the multi-faceted attack the Dolphins have to offer.

ATLANTA 34, Tampa Bay 10 (+11 1/2) - Josh Freeman regressed badly last week and Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Jim Bates was shown the door by head coach Raheem Morris with the unit ranking 27th and 31st in yards and points allowed respectively. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan is back home after two so-so outings - and losses - on the road. Even being likely without Michael Turner for at least one more week, Atlanta should win this handily.

CINCINNATI 23, Cleveland 13 (+14) - Did Brady Quinn finally wake up last week, or was it the comically bad Detroit defense that was responsible? Were the Bengals exposed as frauds last week, or is it simply a jinx with them in Oakland? And whose bright idea was it to give the Browns four of their last five games at home, starting next week? With so many questions and no readily apparent answers, this number is too big to spot.

Seattle 20, ST. LOUIS 0 (+1) - With Marc Bulger out at least three weeks with a fractured fibula (only three?), there could be two double shutouts by one division foe over another completed this week (the first meeting in Seattle went to the home team, 28-0 on opening day). But whether that in fact happens or not, can't see how the Seahawks can be stopped from notching their tenth straight victory over the Rams.

Indianapolis 23, HOUSTON 16 (+3 1/2) - Lost in all the Peyton Manning hero-worship is the fact that the Colts have allowed the fewest points in the league (157). That's awfully cute of them dangling that three-and-a-half-point spread in our faces, but I'm not falling for it.

SAN DIEGO 33, Kansas City 17 (+13 1/2) - What a difference a change at general manager makes: Since 2003, the year after GM Bobby Beathard left, the Chargers are 40-15 from November 1st onward when they had gone 8-41 in such games during the six years prior to that - graphic proof that mortgaging top draft choices for quick fixes (Beathard's modus operandi) has something in common with crime: It doesn't pay. As for the matter at hand, San Diego won the first meeting 37-7 at Arrowhead in Week 7; and if there is any reason why the Chiefs can reverse that outcome massively enough on the road to even cover, much less win outright, I for one can't find it.

Jacksonville 20 (+3), SAN FRANCISCO 13 - For want of even a serviceable quarterback, San Francisco's season has been lost. And exactly why are the 4-6 Niners favored to beat the 6-4 Jags - especially when the AFC leads the interconference season series 22-18?

TENNESSEE 24, Arizona 10 (+1) - With his play-calling after Kurt Warner went out with an apparent concussion last week, Ken Whisenhunt proved yet again that he has zero confidence in Matt Leinart. Even a split of their six remaining games will give the Titans the all-time mark for best final record following an 0-6 start.

MINNESOTA 31, Chicago 14 (+10 1/2) - Instead of getting his team ready for the playoffs come January, Lovie Smith may very well be spending that month looking for a new job. Home team's 8-3-3 against the line in this one since 2002.

Pittsburgh 24 (+2 1/2), BALTIMORE 20 - Underdogs went 10-6 last week, making them 29-15 over the last three. Taking Big Ben's word for it that he'll play.

MONDAY NIGHT

NEW ORLEANS
33, New England 23 (+3) - While this should be a highly interesting and entertaining game, it is being way, way overhyped by the media. Pats still haven't won a game in the other team's building this year, their lone "road" victory in 2009 coming at London over Tampa Bay.

BEST BETS: ATLANTA, SEATTLE, JACKSONVILLE

NOTE: This column is posted elsewhere, hence the inclusion of the Thursday games. Atlanta, Seattle and Jacksonville are the Best Bets for the purposes of this contest only; all other places where these picks are posted show Green Bay, Dallas and Seattle as Best Bets.
