Cool Anthony's Week 12 Picks

Last week: 8-7-1. Season totals: 73-81-6, Pct. .475. Best Bets: 13-19-1, Pct. .409.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY

New England
27, DETROIT 13 (+7) - Favorites have covered in all eight Thanksgiving afternoon games the past four years, and the eleven-day break between this game and next Monday night's likely "AFC East title game" against the Jets at home may help innoculate the Patriots from the danger of looking ahead to it.

New Orleans 27, DALLAS 20 (+3) - If not for this and next week's game at Indianapolis, the Cowboys might have had a very interesting ending to their season. With Reggie Bush back in the lineup and Drew Brees back in top form, the Saints should avenge last year's home loss to Dallas which spolied their bid for a perfect season.

N.Y. JETS 24, Cincinnati 20 (+9 1/2) - Since it's mathematically impossible to pull a game out in the last ten seconds and cover a spread this big ...

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 17, Jacksonville 16 (+9) - How the Giants can be favored by anywhere near this much is beyond me. Indeed, only Jacksonville's 1-5 record both ways since 2008 as a visitor in cold weather keeps this from being an outright upset.

Pittsburgh 24, BUFFALO 17 (+5) - The Steelers are 7-1 straight up and 8-0 versus the points in their last eight against Buffalo, but this could be tricky as Pittsburgh may be looking ahead to next Sunday night's putative "AFC North title game" at Baltimore.

WASHINGTON 27, Minnesota 7 (+3) - New head coach for the Vikings, but same old result for them in a Triple Witching Hour game - another lopsided loss.

ATLANTA 31, Green Bay 24 (+1) - How can you possibly go against Matt Ryan laying only one point at home when he's 18-1 at home? He even won going away on the road last week.

CLEVELAND 16, Carolina 7 (+11) - The Browns aren't 11 points better than Harvard! Take the points.

HOUSTON 21, Tennessee 0 (+6 1/2) - Rusty Smith? He's a serious goose-egg candidate even against the Texans defense, if you can call it that.

OAKLAND 23, Miami 10 (+3) - And speaking of goose-eggs: The Dolphins are coming off laying one, so you know what to do here - and like the way Tom Cable has evaded the tempter tantrum and is sticking with Jason Campbell at quarterback.

SEATTLE 31 (+1), Kansas City 21 - The Seahawks have nothing to be ashamed of from last week's showing in New Orleans, but the Chiefs have plenty to be ashamed of on the road this year - where they're 1-4, when they're 5-0 at home - and for a considerably longer time on the carpet, upon which they've dropped 15 of their last 16. Best bet.

BALTIMORE 16, Tampa Bay 13 (+9) - The lowly Panthers were actually hanging with the Ravens until they started getting careless with the ball, something Josh Freeman never does. And Freeman is 9-1 against the spread on the road in his brief but highly promising NFL career. Definitely taking.

Philadelphia 23, CHICAGO 14 (+3 1/2) - All the buzz concerning the Eagles these days centers around Michael Vick this and Michael Vick that, but that was a pretty nice offense their defense held to 208 yards from scrimmage Sunday night - and while both teams are 7-3, Philly's ten opponents are 53-47 among them while Chicago's are 39-61. Home team's also 2-6 pointwise in the last eight in the series.

DENVER 31, St. Louis 17 (+4 1/2) - The Broncos went from being 20-point winners one week to 21-point losers the next. But what went down so fast figures to come back up just as fast in a matchup where the home team has won seven in a row (with six covers) and the Rams having covered in just two of their last eleven in cold weather.

San Diego 30 (+3), INDIANAPOLIS 23 - If the Chargers can "steal" this one, they will likely win out, and at 11-5 would even have an outside shot at a first-round bye - and some "theft" this would be, given Philip Rivers' 33-5 straight-up record in November or later including 16 consecutive wins, their 9-3 outright and 11-1 spread record lifetime at Indy, and their 21-8-1 mark against the line indoors since 1992.

MONDAY NIGHT

ARIZONA
17 (+1), San Francisco 13 - Dude, where's my Carr? Starting at quarterback for the 49ers here, if Mike Singletary has even one quarter of a brain - and at least the Cardinals have an excuse for their fall-off this year, in the form of all the talent they lost over the spring. And lest we forget, the shutout thing applies in this one too, San Fran having gotten zilched 21-0 at home by Tampa Bay last week for their first home blanking in 33 years.

BEST BETS: ATLANTA, SEATTLE, SAN DIEGO
