Default Manny Suspended 50 Games for Performance Enhancing Drug positive test

So, there's this.

It's Manny, so I'm not surprised he's dumb enough to get caught.
Dumb enough to do them, that surprises me a little bit.

So, I'm left with two feelings, neither are the moral outrage that one associates with positive test results anymore.
1. Are these pudgy but not fat guys eating more to disguise potential bulk from steroids?
2. Should I adopt the much more pragmatic attitude one of my friends at work has about these things: why didn't he wait to go back on cycle till AFTER his test? What an idiot! ?

I don't have the energy for moral indignation.
But, I like to think I'm not _quite_ so morally ambivalent on the matter as to be pragmatic/accepting of the use of these drugs.

What's a casual fan to do?
We can't just say "Manny being Manny" here because it's not jut Manny being Manny.

Baseball being baseball?

Or, is this one of the reasons he put off re-signing with the Dodgers for so long? As a free agent I don't believe he is subject to testing but once he signs with a team then he is fair game to be tested. Even Stevie Wonder could see that the Dodgers were the only team seriously pursuing him and nobody was offering the deal Boras claimed he had on the other line so why did he drag his feet for so long? Was he trying to dry out prior to being tested?

This brings me back to a point that I have made in the past -- major league baseball needs to either market or sanction the supplements that players take. If the supplement has the sanction of MLB, it is fine to take. If it doesn't, the player is not subject to being suspended.
Ultimately, the player is responsible for what he takes and must understand what is acceptible and what is not.

ESPN is reporting that he tested positive for hGC which is a female fertility drug known to regulate testosterone production.

Actually shooting estrogen make testosterone production go up in both males and females.

The reason for that is that estrogen is actually a building block for testosterone.

I find it an interesting report. After actually reading the original story, I realized: "Oh, he's on viagra, or cialis, which, while supporting sports, are banned substances."

This is a similar idea, but one that doesn't scream male sexual performance in quite the same way that enzyte, viagra or cialis do.

From the reports I have been hearing the drug is sometimes used by steroid users to restart testosterone production to get back to normal levels of the hormone as certain steroids cause one's baseline testosterone levels to be lower than normal which was cause a positive doping test.

Fifty games is not a long time, Manny will be back by the summer. But with Manny's attitude, I'm not surprised he was careless enough to take a banned substance.

I dunno, Marc. Fifty games is one-third of the season, more or less. In the NFL's vaunted and regaled substance abuse schedule, his abuse would be punished by a four-game suspension, which is only one-quarter of the season. One could argue that this is actually a harsher punishment than he'd receive in leagues which are generally considered (I have come to believe that we're lied to on this now) to have more stringent testing and abuse penalties.

I think you're right, Dave. The harshness may stem from perception. Because of the MLB's long 162-game season, even Manny's 50-game ban can seem smaller than a 4-game ban in the NFL. Not equal, but perception.
