Last week: 10-4. Season totals: 37-36-1, Pct. .507. Best Bets: 6-9, Pct. .400.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold
.

SUNDAY

DALLAS 27, N.Y. Giants 14 (+4) - Since this is another division game, a letdown is not in the offing for Dallas and the Giants have been simply terrible coming off a bye week: 3-13 straight up and 4-11-1 against the line, including both losses and non-covers in their last four.

BUFFALO 24, N.Y. Jets 13 (+3) - The home team has won five straight in this one and the Jets are very limited on offense right now; meanwhile, Kelly Holcomb looked solid against Miami.

PITTSBURGH 16, Jacksonville 10 (+1 1/2) - The Steelers survived a major scare when it turned out that Ben Roethlisberger's knee wasn't injured anywhere near as seriously as it first appeared; and Pittsburgh has not one but two experienced backups at quarterback and should squeak by here at home.

TAMPA BAY 17, Miami 14 (+5 1/2) - Both of Miami's losses this year have come on the road, but both of them were also on artificial turf. This one's on grass, and the Bucs seem lost on offense without rookie running back Cadillac Williams, who might not play this week either; taking.

DETROIT 23, Carolina 19 (P) - These teams have met three times previously, and all three of the games were in Carolina; I have seen countless situations like this in the past where a team finally gets to play such an opponent at home, and more often than not they win when they do.

BALTIMORE 16, Cleveland 6 (+4) - Kyle Boller won't be back for at least one and probably two more weeks, but Anthony Wright is adequate at home and Jamal Lewis has had some of the greatest games of his career against the Browns.

Cincinnati 20, TENNESSEE 13 (+3) - Of the Titans' two wins, one was at home over a team using a backup quarterback with a horrendous lifetime record on the road, and the other was over the NFL's lone remaining winless team; have to doubt their ability against this caliber even though Tennessee has beaten Cincinnati in nine of the last ten meetings.

Minnesota 14 (+1 1/2), CHICAGO 10 - Yes, I'm well aware of how horrible the Vikings have been outdoors and on natural grass for the longest time; I also know that the home team has won six in a row in this series. But how can Kyle Orton be favored over anybody?

Atlanta 27, NEW ORLEANS 13 (+3) - Doubt if Michael Vick will miss this game after having been listed as no worse than questionable all last week and the Falcons have an almost incomprehensible 18-2-1 spread record in their last 21 road games against the Saints, with one of the two non-covers coming in a meaningless game (for Atlanta) last December.

KANSAS CITY 23, Washington 20 (+6) - Why have the linemakers become a Chiefs Admiration Society? There is no justification for this number and if the Redskins could hang tough in Denver there is no reason they cannot do the same in Kansas City.

New England 28 (+3), DENVER 24 - As long as the Patriots keep on winning as underdogs, keep on using them.

San Diego 27, OAKLAND 20 (+2) - What did the Chargers ever do to the league? This is the second of three consecutive fatigue games (where they didn't have a bye the previous week but the other team did) for San Diego, and they're 4-11 straight up in that situation since the bye era began in 1990 (only Denver has had more such games), but they've covered four in a row vs. Oakland and the number seems favorable.

SEATTLE 21, Houston 16 (+8 1/2) - The Seahawks have "letdown" written all over them and the winless Texans did play the 4-1 Bengals tough on the road two weeks ago.

MONDAY NIGHT

INDIANAPOLIS 38, St. Louis 34 (+12 1/2) - The Colts lead the league in fewest points allowed but have yet to face any offense even remotely resembling that of the Rams, who receive their largest spot in seven years here. Take the points and over the total, which opened at a rather modest 51.

BEST BETS: DALLAS, BUFFALO, ATLANTA
