Cool Anthony's Week 15 Picks

2

Last week: 10-6. Season totals: 89-110-9, Pct. .450. Best Bets: 20-19-3, Pct. .512.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY NIGHT

Denver 14 (+2), HOUSTON 10 - The downside of these Thursday night games: Had this game been on Sunday instead, Matt Schaub's injured left shoulder might have healed enough to allow him to start at quarterback for the Texans. But as matters stand, it will be Sage Rosenfels under center for Houston, and no way Rosenfels wins twice in four and a half days.

SATURDAY NIGHT

Cincinnati 24, SAN FRANCISCO 0 (+9 1/2) - Somebody out there, or up there, must want Marvin Lewis to keep his job: First his team gets to face Brock Berlin, now Shaun Hill. That's two easy victories handed to him on a silver platter!

SUNDAY

NEW ENGLAND 63, N.Y. Jets 14 (+24) - The Patriots need 97 points in their last three games to reach 600 for the season, and Bill Belichick will make Eric Mangini pay for ratting him out. Anything is possible here, up to and including Belichick calling onside kicks and stopping the clock a la George Allen.

PITTSBURGH 17, Jacksonville 6 (+4) - The Steelers can stop any running game, and can't see David Garrard beating them by throwing the ball 40 times. Jacksonville has also lost three in a row both ways as a visitor in cold weather.

CLEVELAND 34, Houston 20 (+5 1/2) - Since their 1-4 start, the Bills have gone 6-2 - but their six wins have come over opponents who are a combined 18-60, and the only two teams with winning records they did face over that span blasted them 56-10 and 36-14.

Seattle 17, CAROLINA 13 (+7) - The issue here is incentive: The Seahawks don't have a whole lot, having wrapped up the NFC West last week and with no realistic chance for a first-round bye - meaning that any Seattle player who is in any degree less than 100% healthy is likely to play sparingly, if at all.

TAMPA BAY 27, Atlanta 6 (+12) - Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin - father of Oakland's head coach, Lane Kiffin - must still be wondering how Sage Rosenfels scored 28 points against his charges, and when Jeff Garcia couldn't play, a huge pile of money went up in flames. But Garcia practiced in full on Wednesday and with a win here the Bucs would become the first team in modern NFL history to make the playoffs both the year before and the year after a season in which they won fewer than five games, the 1982 strike year excepted.

MIAMI 13 (+3 1/2), Baltimore 10 - And even if the Dolphins don't win outright, Baltimore's only road win this year was by two at San Francisco, and the Ravens are 0-6 against the spread on the road. This could spell doom for Brian Billick.

NEW ORLEANS 38, Arizona 17 (+4) - Because of both their remaining schedule and their favorable tie-breaker position the Saints have far and away the best shot at the playoffs of all the 6-7 teams in the NFC, and they sent a very real message on Monday night that the team that made it to the final four a year ago is back. If they bring it here, it won't even be close.

Green Bay 27, ST. LOUIS 24 (+9 1/2) - One week after the Cowboys had their hiccup, the Packers will have theirs.

Tennessee 14, KANSAS CITY 13 (+4) - For the second time in as many weeks, the Titans must face a team against whom they have had a recent history of struggling (five losses in the last six games), plus Tennessee has a current nine-game no-cover streak versus the AFC West. And you never know when Vince Young is going to have one of those days when he couldn't throw the ball in the ocean if he was standing on the beach.

Indianapolis 37, OAKLAND 17 (+10 1/2) - The Colts would lose the tie-breaker to Pittsburgh for a first-round bye in the playoffs - so if the Steelers do indeed win their early game, double the bet on Indianapolis.

DALLAS 30, Philadelphia 7 (+10) - The Eagles have been favored in ten of their 13 games, yet they're 5-8. The Reid-McNabb era can't end a moment too soon.

SAN DIEGO 34, Detroit 10 (+10 1/2) - The Chargers are determined to ride LaDainian Tomlinson into the playoffs. The Lions are lucky that they're playing Kansas City at home next week; otherwise they would be in grave danger of closing out their once-promising season with an eight-game losing streak.

N.Y. GIANTS 17, Washington 0 (+4 1/2) - In their last two visits to Club Med to take on the Giants, the Redskins didn't score a touchdown either time, losing 19-3 last year and 36-0 in 2005. With Jason Campbell out, there is no reason they cannot make it three in a row.

MONDAY NIGHT

MINNESOTA 16, Chicago 3 (+9) - Bobby Petrino isn't the only coach who has quit on this season: Witness Lovie Smith's decision to start Kyle Orton at quarterback in this game, and presumably the last two as well.

BEST BETS: NEW ENGLAND, NEW ORLEANS, N.Y. GIANTS
