Default Army Makes Dubious History, Hires New Old Coach

Army, with their loss Saturday to a decent Navy team, set college football history by recording the first ever 0-13 season. Yuck.

Army also announced today that they had hired their next coach, Bobby Ross.

I'm not sure I like that hire. First of all, isn't he almost 70? Second, while I won't question his history, I'm just left sort of shaking my head. Was he really the best choice? Was he the only guy who wanted the job? I think Army could have taken a page out of the Mississippi State playbook and tapped a black coach for the job. It might not have been glamorous enough for Charlie Strong or Doug Williams, but there must be other ready and willing guy out there. Departing my minor minority rant, the Harvard coach was nearly chosen for the Navy job two years ago before Paul Johnson got the job; why couldn't have Army gone to that well again? The Harvard coach has done a damn good job with the Crimson under limitations similar in size and shape to those that affect the Cadets.

Ah, well. At least we can rest assured that the wishbone, mostly phased out at Army already, will be completely dead there, now.

Penn State WR's coach Kenny Carter was in the running for the job.

At least Army has a "name" coach now. People at least recognize who Bobby Ross is. He had success at Georgia Tech and then blew it in the NFL with the Lions. I guess Army is following the new college trend- hiring an ex-NFL coach.

On the bright side: it can't get much worse from here. It's kind of like being the Bengals coach: win 6-7 games and you are a saint. There are low expectations, and that's good for a coach.
