Twins pick up a game on the White Sox tonight. They are 7-1 on this homestand and have only picked up 1/2 a game on the White Sox. The magic number is 20 and there are 23 games to play. If the Twins can win 15 of those, they will certainly win the division. I hope to see them finish strong and win 15.

Twins are the first team to clinch a division title, and are tied with the Yankees for the best overall record in baseball. If the Rays win tonight, the Twins will be in first place.

Goodness gracious, great balls of fire! There was a whole lotta chokin' goin' on in baseball Friday night:

Tampa Bay, looking to secure the AL East title and the league's top seed in the upcoming playoffs instead of a wild card, got blanked 7-0 by the Kansas City Royals, who must want to evade the AL Central cellar real bad (KC's win prevented the Indians, 7-3 winners over the White Sox at Chicago, from clinching fourth place outright in the Central).

The Twins could have capitalized on Tampa Bay's loss and gained on both them and the idle, rained-out Yankees for the number-one seed - but they dropped a 6-3 decision at home to AL East fourth-place Toronto.

Meanwhile, over in the National League, the Phillies are on siesta this weekend after already having wrapped up home-field advantage throughout the entire playoffs - yet that didn't stop them from thrashing the wild-card-seeking Braves 11-5 in Atlanta.

And also on the NL front, the Central champion Reds saw their bid for the league's #2 seed essentially evaporate when they lost 4-3 at home to the Brewers, who reduced their magic number for clinching third place in the division to one.

Casey Stengel's iconic quip needs repeating:

Can anyone here play this game?

Apparently not if they're fighting for a playoff seed - or even a playoff berth.

The Twins still have the best record in the AL this month. The playoff teams are just trying to keep their important cogs healthy, or get them healthy as the case may be. No one wants an injury in the last week of a season.

To me at least, you "risk injury" to try and evade four potential road games in the ALCS against a team that was 52-29 at home this season, when you were just 41-40 on the road.

And the Braves choked again tonight - as did the Yankees, blowing that lead in the second game of the doubleheader the way they did.

Yankees and Twins lost again today and the Rays are in extras in KC.
The AL playoffs start on Wednesday with the Rangers going to Tampa (St. Pete, actually), and the Yankees coming to Minnesota.
Not sure what the NL playoffs look like just yet. If the Giants hold on, they host ther Braves and the Reds go to Philly (not an enviable task). If the Pads win, they play the Giants again tomorrow and the winner plays the Braves on Tuesday. Clear as mud, right?

By the way, the Twins have the best home record in baseball this season at 53-28. I guess the "Metrodome-magic" really wasn't the Metrodome.
