Cool Anthony's Week 9 Picks

Last week: 9-4. Season totals: 51-61-5, Pct. .457. Best Bets: 7-16-1, Pct. .313.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

DETROIT
24 (+3 1/2), N.Y. Jets 21 - Wonder if Lions head coach Jim Schwartz was ever in the Seabees? After all, the difficult he's already done, with Detroit's offense, while the impossible - resurrecting a defense that allowed the second most points in NFL history the year before he arrived - will take a bit longer. And the Jets really blew it by getting shut out last week, the first goose-egg to be laid in an NFL game this year: In 2007-09, such teams went 3-19 in their next game! The first of quite a few upsets this week.

N.Y. Giants 20, SEATTLE 0 (+5 1/2) - In the wake of the sweeping Republican gains in Tuesday's elections, Karl Rove gushed that "Climate is gone" (referring to the Democrats' cap-and-trade agenda). With Thursday's announcement that Matt Hasselbeck will not play here pursuant to the concussion he suffered last week in Oakland and that five-year bench-jockey Charlie Whitehurst will start, the home team's nine-game winning streak in this series is likewise gone.

Chicago 16, BUFFALO 7 (+1) - Clearly someone in the Buffalo front office didn't do their homework when they settled on this home game to be the one played in Toronto, as the host side herein is 9-1 straight up lifetime, including seven straight wins (and covers) by a combined 116 points! The Bills are also 3-12 straight up and 5-10 against the line indoors (Rogers Centre has a retractable roof, which almost certainly will be closed) dating back to 1999, and that includes two losses (both ways) at Toronto in which they scored a grand total of one touchdown in both games put together.

New Orleans 24, CAROLINA 10 (+6 1/2) - The Saints are slowly getting healthy again: Darren Sharper has already returned, with Reggie Bush next up, maybe even this week. John Fox is a complete fool for sticking with Matt Moore at quarterback, for the only way he holds onto his job is to send Jimmy Clausen out there and hope Clausen rallies the Panthers to a respectable finish.

ATLANTA 27, Tampa Bay 24 (+9) - Peyton Manning lost his first nine starts on the road. Josh Freeman has won five of his first eight starts on the road, and is 7-1 against the spread in those eight games. While that doesn't necessarily mean that Freeman will go on to have an even more storied career than Manning, it does point out the Bucs as a solid take with the points in this spot.

New England 21, CLEVELAND 7 (+5) - Despite a suspect running game, a suspect defense, and no legitimate number-one receiver for Tom Brady to throw to, the Patriots find themselves in sole possession of the NFL's best record - and they've won and covered four in a row over the Browns, outscoring them by 61 points in the quartet, including by 44 in the last two.

BALTIMORE 17, Miami 14 (+5 1/2) - The Ravens are 3-0 at home this year, but 1-2 against the spread - and you all know by now how the Dolphins always win on the road and lose at home. But maybe you didn't know that they've also covered in six of their last seven cold-weather games. Take the points - at least.

Arizona 21 (+9), MINNESOTA 20 - The Cards are 0-5 at Triple H (last winning at Minnesota in 1977, five years before the place was built) but have gotten closer with each visit, losing by 27 there in 1991, 24 in 1996, 20 in 1998 (in the playoffs), 17 in 2000, and five in 2006 (covering the spread there for the first time); and with Ken Whisenhunt bringing the curtain down on the calamitous Max Hall experiment while the self-destructive contretemps in Minnesota continue, the time is ripe for the next logical step to be taken. Another upset.

San Diego 38, HOUSTON 24 (+1 1/2) - Gary Kubiak is eerily reminiscent of Bill "Tiger" Johnson: Both were the second head coaches their respective teams ever had - and Johnson's team, the Bengals, squandered two seemingly sure playoff opportunities, after which Johnson was fired following an 0-5 start in his next season (1978). Kubiak could be headed down the very same path; and the Texans - who in their own way came up even smaller than the state's other NFL team did last week - have taken an 0-for-3 collar against San Diego by an aggregate 86-33. The Chargers seem ready to make their patented second-half run, and will start that run this week with an emphatic win.

Indianapolis 41 (+2 1/2), PHILADELPHIA 14 - At the mere sight of number 18 in a Colts jersey, the Eagles will cringe: The wearer of that shirt has a 132.3 passer rating in three games against them - the highest career passer rating for any active quarterback versus an opponent he has faced a minimum of three times - and all told Indy has won the last four over them by 24, 22, 27 and 27 points - the only one of the NFL's 496 head-to-head matchups in which one team has won all of the four most recent meetings by three TDs or more. This will be another total bloodbath in what could be the best bet of the entire season, if not the last several entire seasons.

Kansas City 27 (+2 1/2), OAKLAND 16 - Yes, it's pretty hard to ignore the 92-17 margin by which the Raiders have outscored their last two opponents. But it's much harder to ignore the spread record of the home team in the last seven years' worth of games between them and the Chiefs: 0-14!

GREEN BAY 31, Dallas 14 (+9) - NBC has been reduced to characterizing the Cowboys as "playing for pride" as they attempt to hype this edition of "America's Game of the Week." The home team in this one has won 12 of the last 13, all by double digits, while Dallas is 12-23-2 against the line since 1995 as a visitor in cold weather.

MONDAY NIGHT

CINCINNATI
20 (+3 1/2), Pittsburgh 17 - Steelers linebacker James Harrison has more fines this year (three) than the Bengals have wins (two). But the bloom appears to have come off Big Ben's rose a lot faster than anyone expected, and I'm looking for Cincy to make one last stand at home in front of the nationwide cameras.

BEST BETS: SAN DIEGO, INDIANAPOLIS, KANSAS CITY
