Default Wade Phillips? Really Cowboys?

In case you didn't know, the Cowboys named Wade Phillips thier head coach today. I find this move a bit surprising. Your thoughts?

Its a smarter move than Ron Rivera. They needed to find someone who would stick with the 3-4 defense since that is what they have the personnel for. As for Phillips, well Im not too excited about this, but at least its not Norv Turner.

He was decent for the Bills got them to 3 playoffs. And lost the music city miracle game. Could be good for Demarcus Ware. I think he maybe able to step in the Shawne Merriman role.

I'm just kind of surprised. I expected the Cowboys to go out and get someone flashy or a young guy. I don't know, this could work out well for them, I was just surprised.

Rather underwhelming choice. Wade Phillips is no better a choice than Norv. Phillips has already shown that he is nothing special as a head coach. My guess is he got the job because he is willing to let Jerry Jones have a hand in everything.

Seems like it had to be SOMETHING like that. Why else wait? They coulda had Bum Jr. a few weeks ago. Maybe Rivera didn't interview well

It's certainly not a sexy pick (in many ways), but let's wait until some results are in.

This is a move that is totally lacking in imagination or enlightenment - not what you'd expect from Jerry Jones at all.

I'd have to say I'm well pleased if I'm a Giants, Redskins or Eagles fan (although about a month from now it will be very hard to cheer up the latter).

I also think this might be a temporary move. Maybe just waiting for Bill Cower. Give Cower a year (maybe two) to enjoy some time off, then fire Phillips and hire Cower. Is this crazy? I don't think so.

Yea it is. Garrett is the next coach after Phillips not Cowher.

No matter how you look at it, this is a stopgap hire. But with Phillips and the 3-4 defense, perhaps they can still win. Depends on how Phillips deals with The Player. For some reason, I like this much better than Norv Turner.

They'll still probably win 8-10 games next year but I doubt they are a serious contender now that Jerry Jones won't have a strong coach like Parcells leaning on him when it comes to some of the personnel decisions I expect the Cowboys to back to drafting horribly again. The one thing Parcells did bring to Dallas that had been lacking since Johnson left was his acumen for pulling good talent out of the draft.

I suspect Norv would have gotten the job if he had not, reportedly, been adamant about the amount of control he wanted to have. Aside from Parcells every coach since Johnson left has been a 'yes man' and pretty much let Jerry Jones walk over him.

I don't think Rivera was ever considered a top candidate for the job. Prior to Phillips getting the nod it was always rumored that Rivera is who Norv wanted to be his Defensive Co-ordinator. The consensus on Rivera seems to be that he may need to get out from Lovie and make a lateral move and coach under and offensive minded head coach in order to land a head coaching job himself.

Jerry Jones = Al Davis?

That increasingly seems to be the case.

I think Jerry Jones is more like Daniel Snyder or George Steinbrenner from the mid 80s personally. Someone who thinks that by merely spending the money on big name talent is going to buy him a championship.
