Default Hart Memorial Trophy Candidates

Who do you think has a chance to win it this year?

Here's my list (as of 11/18/06):

Jaromir Jagr (New York Rangers)
This guy is unstoppable. He has an amazing feel for the ice and can score from just about any where. I think he's going to be the points leader at the end of the season.

Marian Hossa (Atlanta Thrashers)
A real shame the Senators couldn't keep him. I think he is just what the Thrashers need to propel them into the playoffs. If anybody can beat Jagr in points this year, it will be this guy.

Honorable mentions: Ilya Kovalchuk (Atlanta Thrashers), Daniel Briere (Buffalo Sabres), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins), Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals)

I suppose there's only 2 in my mind right now, but that could change later.

Uh, what about Brind'Amour? He is tied with Hossa for the league lead in scoring and is arguably the best defensive forward in the league.

You're right, double. I Should have added him, and that was my own bias why I didn't. He always kills the Penguins. 75 points in 66 games. And his back check is amazing.

Brind'Amour has always been a guy who toils in obscurity. When he was in Philly Lindros was the guy and when he first came to Carolina it was Francis' team. The media loves Staal but the Canes are Brind'Amour's team right now. It is no co-incidence that during his current 8 game point streak the Canes are 6-2 and he has 3 game winners during that stretch and he has had the game winner in 4 of their last seven wins.

A bit early in the season to start thinking MVP, no? Anyway, my vote's for Dan Cloutier. It takes a special talent to allow 3 goals on 5 shots against Phoenix.

Also, no Thornton in that original list, I see. Today is Dec. 1st. Give him time to come right. Also, if Crosby gets a nod, so should Malkin.

Update:

Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins)
It's going to take a lot for me to think twice about this pick. The kid is simply amazing. He took some heat for not shooting and trying to force passes at the start of the season, but he's changed that. He has amazing player awareness and knows when to pass and when to shoot. 6 points in a game ain't bad either; and leading the league in scoring (with few games played due to injury). He's the face of the NHL and he should be the face of the MVP.

Dominik Hasek (Detroit Red Wings)
Ever see a 41 year old (42 in late January) goalie move like him? I'm sure the Red Wings are happy with his performance. Another solid performance against the Devils recently (stopping a 13 year drought in NJ by the way) and leading the league in GAA. His 4 shutouts are good for the league leading as well. His only problem? Rest and gameplay. It's going to take a lot of work to make sure he stays healthy and rested, but at the same time focused and loose. Can't go wrong with one of the best goalies to ever play the game.

Honorable Mentions: Marian Hossa (Atlanta Thrashers), Jaromir Jagr (New York Rangers), Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals),Daniel Briere (Buffalo Sabres), Jarome Iginla (Calgary Flames)

If current trends continue, there's no reason Crosby won't be lifting the Hart at season's end. Kid is unreal. Now, if only the Pens played with any kind of consistency, his case would be rock solid.
