Default Apple releases video iPods!

The Shuffle was nice, the Nano was cute, but I held off for the one I really want: the video iPod! I just ordered a black 30 gig and can't wait. It'll be awesome to be able to take videos with me anywhere, whether it be on planes, in lobbies, etc. You can also buy TV shows for $1.99/episode, although I won't be paying for low-res non-HDTV episodes. It's intended for iPods, not large screens, for sure. But this is cool, huh? It's going to be a popular gift this December.

By the way, check this out: http://www.apple.com/ipod/ads

I wouldn't mind having one if Apple would let me swap my 40Gig 4th gen for one straight up.

I bought a Mini at the end of August. Suits me just fine for now. Maybe I'll buy a new one when I go off to college.

Ouch, I wouldn't be happy if I had bought a Mini right before they discontinued them and replaced them with a much better model (Nano). But if it makes you feel any better, Apple dropped the price of their cinema displays by $200 right after I bought mine. Could have gotten an iPod just with that!

I'm not terribly disappointed. I just needed something to hold my music, contacts and the ability to hold some files. The nanos are nice, I checked one out at the Apple Store when I was looking at cases, but they seem too thin and small. I'm afraid that if I fell on it or dropped it, it would snap in half.

Alex, the Nano may be small, but that doesn't mean it's flimsy or more fragile than the Mini. It's pretty much a regular iPod shrunken. But it sounds like the Mini suits you well and it's definitely not a bad player.

Nano has plastic covering and is more prone to scratches than that Mini because the Mini had alumnium covering. The Nano screen malfunctions have also been well documented.

There is no incentive for people who own a 4G color iPod to upgrade to the video 5G iPod. The video content Apple has provided is too low to view on a computer monitor or even a TV. You can't even fly across the country and watch a movie on your iPod, not only because there are no movies available on iTunes video store but because even if there were, the battery only lasts 2 hours and most movies are more than 2 hours long. I do not watch Lost or Desparate Housewives and why would you buy a series on Apple's DRM program when you can only watch it on your iPod, or computer? You can't really back them up because you can't even burn them onto a CD or DVD. Why wouldn't you pay $10 more so you could watch these episodes anywhere? And how big of a fan do you have to be to warrant not paying $10 more in 6 months when it comes to DVD just so you can see the same episode the day after it airs?

And you can't even put your own DVD movies on your iPod, at least with software provided by Apple.

I love my 3G iPod. I love it so much that I was really considering buying an iMac or iBook in the near future and was DEFINITELY going to buy a new iPod within the next 6 months. And the new iMac has some really cool new features in addition to what I think is already a solid system but announcements like Wednesday's from Apple remind me to keep a level head and not be TOO tempted by Apple. Their products are still overpriced and if you want to upgrade or do anything with your Apple computer you have to play by their rules. And quite frankly their rules for the video iPod are horrible and they did not innovate enough on their video iPod as was widely speculated. I won't be upgrading my iPod next year unless they show me some real improvements.

Don't get me wrong it was a step in the right direction but there's really no incentive for current iPod owners to upgrade, especially if they have a 4G. The only thing you are buying when upgrading is the bragging rights to say you can play video on your iPod because really, how much are you going to use that feature. They also didn't upgrade storage capacity (20 --> 30 GB not a notable jump; the high end limit hasn't changed) and battery life is worse on the 30GB version.

*rubs his eyes in utter disbelief*

First, Lee is posting? Secondly, leaning toward a Mac?! Wow.

I forgot about the scratching part, and Lee is right. The Nanos scratch easily, although that's different from breaking in half or falling apart. Sounds like someone's been making the rounds at Mac news sites.

About battery life: Apple claims 12 hours for the 30 gig (one I ordered) and 20 for the 60 gig. I don't know if that's video or music, but I would hope it's longer than two hours.

The important thing here is Apple is doing with TV just what they did with music. The theory is that if you give people the means to legally get copyright info, they will not pirate. A billion songs later, the iTunes Music Store is living proof. So Apple is making deals to let people download shows they may have missed and making it easy and affordable. Now you don't have the "but I had no choice" excuse when you try to pirate TV shows.

And the availability of video content is going to expand. There are already tutorials for how to put DVD movies and even porn on your video iPod. This is only the beginning, and they will improve its capabilities over time. NBC is rumored to be interested in getting their shows available, as well, so we're not stuck with just ABC. And the real value for me is putting Internet-downloaded shows and video podcasts I already watch every week on my video iPod.

That said, I personally won't be doing it because I have a DVR and don't miss shows, and if I did, I wouldn't pay for that low resolution when illegal but much better torrent versions are out there (HD captured). But for most average users, it will be nice.

Regarding the "video iPods aren't enough of a reason to upgrade" argument, I disagree. It's not just video, it's a beautiful color interface and a larger screen, plus extras like the security lock software and time zone views, etc. It's still black and white vs. color and video, that's huge.

The 3Gs didn't have clickwheels, right? I think the 4G clickwheels are much better than the multi-button touch-sensitive 3G ones (my first iPod).

But hey, I give you credit for at least attempting to look like you haven't changed your ways. I love how you admit your admirable and temptation toward Apple, then bash them like old times to make sure you aren't too pro-Apple. The Light Side is calling, Mr. Manchur. I can tell it has been pulling you closer and closer even in your absense from this site. Don't be ashamed, it's only for your benefit, as you will eventually find out.

Okay, Star Wars references aside, I would wait for the Intel Macs in 2006. They are gong to have better battery life and faster processors, all with the amazing Apple hardware design and elegant OS X.

30GB: 14 hrs music, 2 hrs video
60GB: 20 hrs music, 3 hrs video

Upgrade from BW (3G & prior) to color, yes, probably makes sense. If the 4G was still around in 6 months when I upgrade I would do it.
Upgrade from 4G (first with click wheel) to 5G, no sense based on the content available NOW.

In a year it will probably make sense for me to upgrade but I'm not going to pay $345 (CDN with student discount) for a 30GB version with a video feature I know I will not use.

For the record, I will ALWAYS own a PC and have a Mac on the side for fun if I ever buy one. Moves like Tuesday though really took me a big step back from being ready to buy one.

I do not know if I will post much, the hockey thing I really needed to add my thoughts on though so that is the reason for my probably temporary return. I hope I do not get vegetables thrown at me here.

From your post in the Hockey forum.
"but this post by ignorant Mr. Marc here was too good to pass up."

You're throwing them yourself. Seriously Lee, you still sound bitter.

And for such an ignorant person, I sure built a site you can't seem to get away from, huh? Look, you're lucky you weren't banned for the hateful and bitter comments you said when you "left," so the least you can do is drop the antagonism toward me and show a little kindness once in a while. If you can't, it's your loss and this community will continue to go on. But I am willing to give you a second chance if you could just put aside your preconceived notions.
