Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

Besides Regis' voice cracking all the time in today's episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, I was, and is, consistently surprised at how little Americans know of their closest neighbours, Canada, and the reason I am bringing this up is that although I know there are many smart ones of you down there... well.. I don't see too many when it comes to questions about other nations.

Did anyone see Who Wants To Be A Millionaire tonight!?

$64,000 Question: Which of these Canadian provinces doesn't border the U.S.?
A: Alberta
B: Newfoundland
C: Saskatchewan
D: Manitoba

To me, that should be about a $1,000 question! Does anyone actually know the answer here? I was quite disgusted when she got the question wrong.

If you gave me a question of, "Which of these United States doesn't border Canada," I am sure I could get it correct.... especially if the answer is so obvious that one of the states is an ISLAND (of course, as I am SURE you know, the answer above is a province that is an island).

But then again, I guess not everyone is as smart as I.

Does any American here actually know how many provinces & territories Canada has!?... or how many official languages we have!?... or who our head of state is!?... or what our national flag looks like!?

At the very least, though, I am sure you know that we have "monopoly" money, as you call it. The $5 bills are blue, the $10's are purple, the $20's are green, the $100's are brown, and I think the $50's are orange -- I've never really looked at a $50 bill before!

Anyways, I wanted to vent my anger about that one question.

Please dont take offense, but I, and most Americans for that matter really dont care how many Provinces are in Canada. And I, for one, didnt know the answer to that question either. I have enough things to remember right here in the States. Its not that we are stupid, we just couldnt give a rat's a$$.

Not one US Citizen that I know knows anything about Canada, nor cares to learn about it, other than their ungodly ability to play Hockey. And that they force NBA players to play up there.

I wouldn't have known the answer to that question, and don't kid yourself. You can't name all the Canadian border STATES off the top of your head.

How about a question about Nunavut instead for 1 million?

Ha ha!!!... That was quite funny! However, SOME American must know SOMETHING about us up here, because that song "Blame Canada" from the movie "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" that was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Song last year was halarious!!!, though probalby not many of you caught the funny parts about Anne Murray, or the girls dressed up in "red suits" dancing with Robin Williams... ANYWAYS.....


However, what's even funnier (<- THAT was said sarcastically) was the recent set of posts between you and Chris about Nunavut.

Chris -- you really got 100% in Social Studies? -- well, I guess you and I are the only good students in that category -- not 100% for me, but pretty close -- good enough for high mark in the subject the past few years.

No, I probably couldn't... but if the answer was so obvious that the state was an island, or down south somewhere, I assure you that I could get the answer correctly.

So Rick... DO you know what Nunavut is? I assume Chris knows, and would be quite pleasantly surpised if anyone else did.

If anyway actually cares, Nunavut was added to maps of Canada in 1999. It is a recently formed region which was part of Northwest Territories. Nunavut is homeland for the Inuits.

I'm extremely impressed with your knowledge of us, Chris!... let's see if you can get this one, the $250,000 question on Millionaire last night (boy, they must be running out of questions or something with all of the Canadiana trivia!... j.j.!)

How many provinces make up Canada?
A: 7
B: 10
C: 12
D: 14

I was even MORE impressed when the contestant eliminated and named two territories (even though we have three now, but still...), and then proceeded to name all the provinces, starting in the west, and going east (with the exception of him mixing up Ontario and Quebec).

I'm one of those "Americans" that know a lot of things about Canada. But ... the only reason I do is because I also hold Canadian citizenship (my mom was born in Canada).

Where in Canada do you Canadians live?

When I visit my grandmother and the rest of my family up north, I head to Sarnia, Ontario (home of the Sting!) and Hamilton, Ontario.
