Heisman Trophy winner QB Matt Leinart has stated that he will decide on Thursday whether he will enter the 2005 NFL draft or spend one more year at USC, electing to make this decision two days earlier than necessary.
The entire Bay Area anxiously awaits the verdict. |

He's an easy 1st rounder......he'd be better off leaving. If he gets hurt badly he's screwed. I know he'll probably be insured, but making a claim would be nothing compared to a decent NFL career.

I could understand staying, the party's, the girls, the fame and so on but yes, he needs to be drafted this year.
So he is about a #5 pick right? Give or take. Who do you think would take him? Projected 2005 NFL draft order 1 San Francisco 49ers 2-14 Needs help every where! 2 Miami Dolphins 4-12 Do I have to comment on this one? 3 Cleveland Browns 4-12 I am not sure Garcia is the man but probably will stay put 4 Chicago Bears 5-11 5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 5-11 6 Tennessee Titans 5-11 McNair may retire 7 Oakland Raiders 5-11 Collins or Gannon 8 Arizona Cardinals 6-10 King was put in so something could happen here 9 Washington Redskins 6-10 Ramsey or Brunell? Neither 10 Detroit Lions 6-10 Sources say Lions considering releasing Harrington 11 Dallas Cowboys Vinny is not getting younger where would he go? Last edited by MaddEnemy; 01-12-2005 at 05:21 PM. |

I think he goes. One of those top 3 teams would take him. The Bears won't at 4.

You just can't risk injury when your draft stock is at it's peak. Leinart isn't going to improve his standing in the draft by playing another season, but he can hurt it. |

Well, listening too him talk he truly enjoys the college life and it would not surprise me if he stays, but this truly one situation where one could not fault the guy for leaving. He would likely go number one if he came out. His stock cannot get any higher and he could run the risk of dropping with a mediocre season.

But, if you were him, and you knew you'd go either to SF, Miami, or Cleveland... wouldn't you strongly consider staying in college?
The money isn't going to change drastically (unless he really stinks it up next year), he never gets touched so his health isn't that big a question, and his receivers will presumably be better... I would really be surprised--disappointed, not surprised-- if he came out. Dave

Actually, his health is a bit of a question and it is one of the reasons he has sited for possibly staying. If you remember back to August he started the season with a sore arm ( elbow tendonitis I believe it was) which was one of the reasons he struggled some early in the season. He gave an interview on The Jim Rome Show before the Orange Bowl saying that one reason to come back is to prove that his arm is sound and that he can stand up to a full season.
He could stand to lose a ton of money if he slips a few spots in the draft. Roethlisberger's signing bonus was nothing compared to what Manning and Rivers got this past summer. Either way it is a bit of a calculated risk. Anyway you cut it chances are if you get drafted that early in the draft as a QB you are going to a crappy team anyways.

I'm not a Leinart historian, but his isn't one of these families for whom he'd go pro to pull them out of the slums, right?
While Big Ben might have missed on the huge sums of cash, at the end of the day, he's ended up in the best position of the three, because he topped most if not all of his incentives. And he's going to the playoffs in his first year as a starter. I suppose Rivers still has that potential, but I don't see it happening, regardless of who he plays for. Dave

I'd want to know who my coach was going to be in SF, honestly.
If they hired Chow, then maybe, were I Leinart, I'd go. Otherwise, he's close enough to know that SF is a team that isn't winning for a couple or three years, minimum. Dave

The Chargers were in the same situation though, it's just that Drew Brees stepped up. Which they didn't expect. Part of why Manning didn't want to go to San Diego.
