Default T.O. In Hot Water Again (Sort Of)

Both the NFL and ABC are reeling from Monday night's intro segment in which league receiving-yards leader Terrell Owens figured prominently.

While ABC has issued a formal apology, the commissioner's office apparently has no immediate plans to discipline Owens - which makes him luckier than his near-namesake, Cleveland RB Terrelle Smith, who along with fellow Browns RB William Green and Steelers linebacker Joey Porter were each fined $10,000 apiece for Sunday's pre-game fisticuffs - which by the way caused CBS to juggle its coverage schedule, as San Francisco viewers were switched from the Ravens-Jets game (which was originally slated to be carried by KPIX, Frisco's CBS affiliate) to the Steelers-Browns game at the last minute.

This is the ultimate tempest in a teapot. You see racier stuff on primetime, daytime...well, everywhere. If the were to show a shooting of a cheerleaders calandar instead, (cheerleaders are more exposed than Nicolette Sheridan was), there'd be no complaints.

Why would they? The day the NFL fines the player/actor for following the script in a commercial to promote the NFL is the day I stop watching the NFL.

We are moving back into the 1950's for crying out loud. What next, 24hr reruns of Leave it to Beaver to keep everyones morals in check.

T.O. should be fine.

It should all fall on ABC and the NFL.

In fact I had a 3 year old son watching the game with me and I was a little pissed seeing that spot on MNF a "family program"

They can show that crap other times or places and I can keep my son from watching it but don't put that trash infront of me and my family during a family program.

So I guess somehow you prevent your son from seeing commercials? And I guess you must be an incredible prude (because this was NOTHING, people, NOTHING) even though you let your 3 year old stay up past 9 (if you're in the Eastern Time Zone and watch a show where they mike the coaches (who cuss?)

Either you are just playing Devil's Advocate or you have a parenting strategy makes no sense.

OMG!! The NFL is thinking of fining it's OWN player for their OWN stupid decisions! Yes I know, Taro Owens' acting is atrocious, but he still doesn't deserve to be fine by doing a promotional piece that the NFL and ABC asked him to! Plus, the Coors Light commercials (sponsored by the NFL) are much more explicit than the back of the lady! Holy moley, the last time I heard something this insane was the last time my pals told me to stop drinking!

There's not much to see, Heathen. ESPNews ran it a couple times yesterday. Haven't been in front of a TV to see it today.

Surf around. Bound to be someone on a 'puter with a TV card who recorded it and posted it somewhere.

Meanwhile, is it okay if I start something of a race war? No?
Oh, well. Ban me.

I can't help but feel, after seeing the clip a couple times, that if Brett Favre or Vinny Testaverde or Bill Parcells were the man into whose arms Sheridan jumped bareback... we'd have much less ado.

But, it was TO. Evil Black Man. Evil Black Man Super Star.

TO is the villain, the reason the NFL fines people for celebrating, the epitome of why Whitey hates the Negro, even in 2004.
And it is a bleeping shame that he gets the white woman.

And that's my Race Card Play of the Day.

You know Dave, that was my exact thinking as well (including the Brett Favre substitute). I rarely ever get to see the opening of MNF, but for some reason, I was watching when it came on and I found it amusing. But as soon as I heard there were complaints, I wondered if they were due to content or to TO being on the receiving end of a naked white woman.

And on 3 yo being up at 9p EST....

My 3 yo daughter is up at that hour, to my wife's constant chagrin (she's the only one home at that hour to care, so...). It's something that happens sometimes. Or in our case, all the time.

As for what a 3yo takes away from a 30-second clip in which a barebacked woman jumps into the arms of a football player for all of about 1.5 seconds, well...

The only way to know is to ask. Or, you can happily ignore it. The odds of it being an emotionally or sexually scarring moment? Right there around nil. Maybe closer to zero, but it's hard to say.

Indeed, as KB noted, the toddlers and preschoolers and 1/2 day K kids are absorbing about 9000% more sexually stimulating television when they watch daytime soaps with their guardians.

Let's own up to what REALLY pisses off about this, shall we?

Thank you.

Dave

I suppose the only way to know is to shoot it featuring a Black Man SuperStar who has no obvious evil: Michael Vick.

I'm seriously considering writing ABC Sports and suggesting they run the same open the next time the Falcons are on MNF, just to see if the MoralMajority-run FCC is as "disappointed."

It'd be an interesting test, imo.

Michael Powell weighed in on it, saying, "I wonder if Walt Disney would be proud."

Probably, Michael, it was excellent execution of cross promotion that has got even more steam because of idiots like the head of the FCC who got their job because of their ****ing father when they don't know the first mother****ing thing about how to run television and radio stations.

This is so ****ing aggravating. More talk of this intro comes out of this game because people don't know how, or want to, explain things to their kids.

And it's pretty ridiculous that the Eagles can come out and release a statement that this annoyed them, seeing as they were the first team in the league to release a lingerie calender for their cheerleaders. These apologies are a joke.

Since when has this country been a such a group of uptight people?

You could only see her back, give me a break.

Our society has slowly been moving into a direction where you can show more skin and say bad words on tv.

20 years ago, saying the word "sex", was out of line on tv.

Only a few years ago, you couldn't say "*****" on TV. Now I hear it on tv all the time.

My point is this... I am sick of people trying to act like sheltered stuck-ups. People use the card "well, I don't want my 12 year old to see the back of a woman on tv." Well guess what, your kid already knows about this stuff. So stop trying to shelter the world from what it doesn't need sheltered from.

People who are against that comercial really do outrage me. This was no big deal and there is no reason to whine about it.

Was it dumb? Yes

Was it appropriate? No

Is it being overblown? Oh heck Yes.

I gotta wonder what the heck they would thinking at Disney when they decided to do that intro.

Well I don't agree with Trojan man, Viagra Devil or any of that but it is forced on me and my family.

The devil is every where.

A naked chick jumping on a man is a liittle more serious IMO Vs. seeing ladies bra and underware in a window and horns for Viagra. I wish it all was not allowed but I would take Viagra over some slut jumping on T.O
