Cool Anthony's Week 5 Picks

4

Last week: 4-10. Season totals: 24-33-5, Pct. .427. Best Bets: 5-6-1, Pct. .458.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 24, N.Y. Jets 16 (+3) - If Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis can get inhaled by Trent Edwards the way he did last week, imagine what Eli Manning will do to him here. New England might have the AFC East clinched after ten games.

NEW ENGLAND 35, Cleveland 10 (+16 1/2) - One of these days I suppose the Patriots will find a spread they can't cover. Then again, one of these days could be none of these days.

WASHINGTON 34, Detroit 13 (+3 1/2) - The Lions are 0-20 lifetime in the nation's capital, and their defense was exposed as a total mess two weeks ago in Philadelphia. This one should be over by halftime.

PITTSBURGH 24, Seattle 20 (+6) - Still can't figure out how the Steelers could lose to the Cards - and surely the Super Bowl revenge angle must be worth something. Take the points.

TENNESSEE 21, Atlanta 10 (+8) - You're certainly entitled to a price on the Falcons here in view of Joey Harrington's 6-28 career record straight up on the road as a starter - and so far this year he has generated minus two net touchdowns (courtesy of interception returns) in his two road outings, compared with plus four in his two home games. Furthermore, Atlanta hasn't beaten The Bud Adams Franchise on the road since 1981. Not thrilled with the idea of laying this kind of wood on what is essentially, at least for the moment, a run-only team - but on aggregate, it's called for under the circumstances.

Carolina 24 (+3), NEW ORLEANS 17 - The Panthers are back indoors this week - and we all know what that means.

ST. LOUIS 10 (+3), Arizona 9 - Gus Frerotte? It wouldn't matter to me if Gus Farace reprised Warren Beatty's role from Heaven Can Wait in real life and started at quarterback for the Rams here. Arizona as a road favorite? No way.

HOUSTON 17, Miami 13 (+5 1/2) - Look at what the Browns did the week after they lost to the Raiders - and right now the Texans have too many injuries on offense to be trusted to cover anything.

KANSAS CITY 20 (+2 1/2), Jacksonville 10 - Larry Johnson is off to a disappointing start, but that might have a lot to do with KC's first four opponents ranking sixth, 10th, first and 12th against the run. The Jaguars are 26th in run defense - and the Chiefs are 37-11-1 against the line as a home underdog dating all the way back to 1983, which, in terms of both success rate and longevity, just might be the most reliable trend of its kind in the NFL. Look for LJ to have a breakout game in the week's safest investment.

INDIANAPOLIS 45, Tampa Bay 17 (+10) - It's both letdown time and meltdown time for the Bucs - the former coming off a huge division win on the road, the latter because they're on the carpet, where they've dropped five in a row by a combined 70 points. And if Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly were no match for Peyton Manning's receivers, Tampa Bay's injury-depleted secondary has no hope whatsoever.

DENVER 27, San Diego 20 (+1) - Even Jay Cutler will have a hard time not covering this number - unless the Broncos lose outright, which given the state of complete disarray the Chargers are in doesn't seem very likely.

SAN FRANCISCO 16 (+3 1/2), Baltimore 13 - Even if Trent Dilfer isn't a Mormon, a place in that faith's celestial kingdom awaits him in light of his conciliatory remarks directed at Brian Billick, who gave up on him six years ago. The Franchise Formerly Owned By Art Modell hasn't won at The Building Formerly Known As Candlestick since 1981, the home team has won the last five meetings, and overrated is as overrated does. Upset special.

GREEN BAY 20, Chicago 14 (+3) - Brian Griese put it up 52 times last week. That's not Bears football, at least not since the days of Sid Luckman. And I guess it's only a matter of time before Lovie Smith turns to Kyle Orton.

MONDAY NIGHT

Dallas 24, BUFFALO 3 (+10) - Getting it done - sort of - in a game that kicked off at 1:00 on a Sunday is one thing; doing it in the prime-time pressure-cooker is another. It says here that Trent Edwards comes down with a bad case of stage fright and the Dallas defense enjoys another confidence-builder.

BEST BETS: WASHINGTON, KANSAS CITY, INDIANAPOLIS

With everybody taking Dallas in the Monday night game, we already know that Week 5 will represent the first win for The Dude since 2005 (sad but true!), and the third win this year for #4.

But because four pickers designated Dallas as a Best Bet and three did not, the exacta is still undecided: It will either be 4-1 (meaning bama4256 second) if Team T.O. does indeed cover, or 4-7 (Dublin Mike second) if either Buffalo covers or there is a push.

And the Eagles did not lose this week!
