Cool Anthony's Week 14 Picks

Last week: 7-9. Season totals: 100-91-1, Pct. .523. Best Bets: 19-20, Pct. .487.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY NIGHT

Pittsburgh 34, CLEVELAND 30 (+9 1/2) - Without Troy Polamalu the Steelers wouldn't stop Cleveland State, much less the Cleveland Browns; and do you think for one minute that come next summer Brady Quinn wants to be looking over his shoulder at Sam Bradford or fellow Notre Damer Jimmy Clausen?

SUNDAY

N.Y. Jets
13, TAMPA BAY 7 (+3) - Mark Sanchez is out (serves him right for not taking Joe Girardi's advice about sliding!), but if the Bucs couldn't beat Matt Moore, then why should they beat Kellen Clemens? Plus the Jets have owned this series, with eight wins and covers in nine meetings.

NEW ENGLAND 31, Carolina 3 (+13) - The Eagles faced this very same test last Sunday, and passed it with flying colors: With injuries to the opposition at both quarterback and running back, they re-established their momentum on defense. Look for the Patriots to do likewise.

New Orleans 27, ATLANTA 13 (+10) - With a two-game lead for home field throughout the NFC playoffs, the Saints have an opportunity to take care of that business with a game or two still left in the regular season, after which the question becomes: To 16-0 or not to 16-0 - or more accurately, to go all out for it, or not to?

Miami 20 (+3), JACKSONVILLE 16 - Just don't think the Jags are consistent enough, and while the Dolphins are coming off a division game (back-to-back division games in fact), not only is Jacksonville also doing so, but has a huge one coming up, at home, on Thursday night, against the Colts.

INDIANAPOLIS 38, Denver 17 (+7 1/2) - Liked the way the Colts rose to the occasion last week - something the Broncos have most emphatically not done in Indianapolis, losing their last three there by a combined 128 to 54.

BALTIMORE 27, Detroit 6 (+13) - Daunte Culpepper is 2-11 lifetime as a starter in cold weather, in which the Lions are 0-14 since their "Reign of Error" began with the hiring of Matt Millen as club president in 2001, and they haven't beaten the former Browns/present Ravens franchise on the road since 1970. That's a whole lot of history to overcome; and their current 18-game losing streak on the road (during which they're 6-12 against the spread) is six shy of the all-time NFL record they themselves established when they went winless on the road in three consecutive entire seasons: 2001, '02 and '03.

CHICAGO 17 (+3), Green Bay 16 - Call it a feeling, or maybe I'm not impressed with Green Bay's unfortunate recent tendency not to come away with touchdowns on first and 10 at the 11, first and 10 at the 13, and so on. Upset special.

MINNESOTA 24, Cincinnati 13 (+6 1/2) - If Cincinnati's history in Minnesota wasn't so god-awful (0-4, outscored 115-48), Brett Favre and his dicey stamina (see last year with the Jets, and last Sunday night in Arizona) might have been worth taking a shot against at this number. Furthermore, of the 13 teams that have winning records, only two have scored fewer points than the Bengals.

HOUSTON 20, Seattle 17 (+6) - One team is underachieving at 5-7, the other team is overachieving at 5-7. It shouldn't be hard to figure out which is which.

KANSAS CITY 23, Buffalo 16 (+1) - At least KC has some semblance of a quarterback - and Buffalo has a 24-50 straight-up record dating back to 1995 as a visitor on the grass.

TENNESSEE 24, St. Louis 7 (+13) - Any house other than his own has been a house of horrors for Kyle Boller: He's lost 12 in a row on the road, is 2-10 against the spread, has averaged 10.9 points per game, and has a passer rating of 57.5.

OAKLAND 21 (+1), Washington 18 - Why the 3-9 Skins are road favorites over the 4-8 Raiders is a mystery - especially since Washington has lost nine straight on the road. Make that ten after they miss all three of their extra-point attempts.

San Diego 37 (+3), DALLAS 20 - Both teams' December records since 2006 tell the story: The Chargers are 15-0 straight up and 10-5 against the spread; the Cowboys, 5-9 and 2-12.

Philadelphia 22 (+1), N.Y. GIANTS 21 - For the third week in a row, the Sunday night matchup is all about injuries: DeSean Jackson insists he will play, and I believe him. Eli Manning insists that his foot injury is not impacting his play, and I don't believe him.

MONDAY NIGHT

SAN FRANCISCO
26 (+3), Arizona 24 - Too little, too late for the fitful 49ers.

BEST BETS: NEW ENGLAND, INDIANAPOLIS, SAN DIEGO
