The Devils thought the Canes would be easy to beat last year. Winning 3-0 going into game 4, they laid back on two consecuitive nights and as a result, the Hurricanes gave them a scare. The Devils didn't get the break to rest injuries between Rounds 1 and 2 that they had expected going into Game 4, as they ended up taking 6 games to be Carolina.
How will a rematch of last year's 1vs8 playoff go this year, as this time it is Carolina that has home ice as the #3 seed? Talk about it in this thread. |

The Devils just aren't as good as they've been in past years. I think the Hurricanes win it as long as the goaltending is good.

Devils lost a lot from last year, but upsets happen, so I'll go with my home-state Devils.

Definitely, Brian -- sleeper series (though those two upset wins by Carolina were amazing games last year! -- saw 5 periods of dominating Carolina hockey).
Chris -- you're right.. the Devils didn't do as well as recent years this year, but they were terrible at the start of the season. In their last ten games, they're 8-2. Brodeur has been HOT since leading Canada to the Olympic Gold Medal, and they'll turn on the burners. This will be an upset if New Jersey loses this series. |

Lets put it this way - Carolina doesnt even deserve to be in the playoffs but they are in. They might sneak in a game, two if lucky but Jersey will pull it off

I'm still sticking with the Canes. Maybe I just have a thing against the Devils or something...

I'm going with the Devils in 5.
NJ has been on fire lately, dating all the way back to when Kevin Constantine took over on January 28th. Since that time, they are 20-8-2-1. And they have been even better since acquiring Joe Nieuwendyk and Jamie Langenbrunner from Dallas. This team is still pretty much the same Devils team that went to the Finals last season and won the Cup the year before. And any team with a healthy Martin Brodeur has a chance to go all the way. The Devils will go far. |

Devils. I just don't like the Canes to win this one.

LEE'S BOTTOM LINE
Here's a sneak peak of tomorrow's NHL preview article that will appear on the SC mainsite (please forgive me -- not proofread just yet ![]() Eastern Quarter Final: (3) Carolina Hurricanes vs. (7) New Jersey Devils After a slow start to the season, the Devils fired Larry Robinson and have battled back from 9th spot at the All-Star Break to a respectable finish in 7th, capped off by an 8-2-0-0 record in their final 10 regular season games. Meanwhile, don't be fooled by the Hurricanes' #3 seed. As a result of leading the weak Southeast Division, the Canes are seeded #3, but the Devils have 95 points compared to the Canes' 91. This year, Irbe will be rested for the playoffs, unlike last year when he played a total of 82 regular season and playoff games. Nevertheless, the Hurricanes will easily bow dow down to the defending Eastern Champs. Bottom Line: New Jersey's #7 seed is deceiving, but because of it, they got an easy first round match-up. Devils in 4. |
