Default Billy Wagner out until 2010

Billy Wagner will undergo major surgery on his pitching elbow to repair a torn medial collateral ligament and a torn flexor pronator muscle in his forearm. He was hoping to return to the mound this season, but that will not happen.
This is not good news for the Mets.

Wagner has been hinting at retirement lately and with only a year left on his deal I wonder if this is it for him.

How much cash have the Mets eaten on some of these contracts they have given out? Wagner is now going to miss a year's worth of time, Pedro has given them 45 starts over the past 3 seasons, and Moises Alou has not even given them 100 games during his two years in New York. I would imagine the Mets have eaten a good $40 million or so on guys missing signficant playing time over the past two years.

They field a competitive team even without these stars. Maybe there is hope for the smaller market teams yet?
Seriously, this is very bad news for the Mets. They won't advance very far in the playoffs without a better bullpen than they have had this season. Sounds eerily similar to other teams, especially the other team in New York.

2010, wow. You don't usually see a guy out longer than a year, and at 37, you do wonder if he can ever get back. Sad story.

He is having the Tommy John surgery which typically takes 12 to 18 months to recover from depending on the player. If he comes back it would not be until September of next year at the very earliest.

And the 1st year back is not a very good one, in most cases. Shoulder issues come up the first year. I wouldn't look for him to be really effective again until 2011, and by then, he'll be 40.
