Cool Anthony's Week 5 Picks

1

Last week: 5-8. Season totals: 30-30, Pct. .500.
Best Bets: 7-5, Pct. .583.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening
line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold
.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 20, Seattle 17 (+9 1/2) - I'd imagine that
when Tom Coughlin was a kid, he never received an
in-school suspension - otherwise that's what he'd have
given Plaxico Burress; and on the other side of the
wide-receiver coin, Deion Branch is slated to make his
long-awaited return from 2007 post-season knee surgery
this week. So there's absolutely no reason in the
world to lay this kind of wood in a battle of the
NFL's two worst post-bye teams, the Giants being 4-15
straight up and 6-12-1 against the spread in that
situation, the Seahawks 5-14 and 3-15-1 respectively.

Washington 24 (+6), PHILADELPHIA 10 - What have the
Eagles done to make anybody think they're better than
the Redskins? They finished behind them last year,
are behind them this year, and Washington just won in
the same building they lost at 13 days earlier; plus
they're 3-8 against the line in their last eleven NFC
East home games and could be missing both running back
Brian Westbrook and two-time Pro Bowl offensive guard
Shawn Andrews again here.

CAROLINA 17, Kansas City 14 (+10) - And don't even
think of giving this number either: The Panthers lost
both starting offensive tackles in last week's
division win at home over Atlanta, and after this
Carolina has back-to-back division games (at Tampa
Bay, then at home to New Orleans).

MIAMI 23 (+7), San Diego 21 - Another upset.
LaDainian Tomlinson is little more than a glorified
decoy right now, and the Chargers have dropped six
consecutive games to the Dolphins and haven't won in
Miami since 1981.

DETROIT 17 (+3), Chicago 16 - The bye week apparently
was just what the proverbial doctor ordered for Jon
Kitna and his sprained knee, and if Detroit's defense
doesn't take the first half off the way the Eagles did
against Chicago Sunday night, the Lions can pull off
still another upset.

BALTIMORE 14 (+3), Tennessee 10 - Keep those cards and
letters coming on those underdogs! So long as Joe
Flacco keeps on covering, why not? And can't trust
Kerry Collins to play well for a whole month on end.

GREEN BAY 24, Atlanta 9 (+7) - No line was available
on this game for most of the week on account of Aaron
Rodgers' bad shoulder; but the Falcons have yet to
score a touchdown on the road in the Mike Smith/Matt
Ryan era, and might not score one here either.

Indianapolis 28, HOUSTON 21 (+3) - Hurricane Ike blew
a hole in Reliant Stadium's retractable roof, but God
of course watches the Lone Star State's other team;
and the Texans are a most ungodly 1-11 straight up
lifetime against Indy and they're only getting a field
goal, almost guaranteeing Colts backers at least a
push unless Houston pulls off the massive form
reversal and wins outright.

Tampa Bay 26 (+3 1/2), DENVER 23 - Nothing really
stands out in this one, apart from the fear factor: Do
the Bucs want to become the team that lost to the team
that had lost twelve in a row?

DALLAS 52, Cincinnati 14 (+17 1/2) - The usual pointy
heads are having a ball speculating on whether Tony
Romo will appease T.O. by going out of his way to get
the ball to him - but no matter who gets it, Dallas
figures to score virtually every time they have it;
plus the Cowboys will be anxious to send a message to
the Giants, who needed overtime to beat the Bengals
two weeks ago, also at home.

Buffalo 31, ARIZONA 21 (P) - More likely same old
Cardinals than same old Bills - and Buffalo has won
four straight in the series, the last three by a
combined 114-49.

SAN FRANCISCO 27 (+3), New England 20 - J.T.
O'Sullivan is doing a much better job of moving his
team down the field than Matt Cassel and the next win
the Patriots notch in San Fran will be their first
ever - and in fact they haven't even come close, going
0-4 there and being outscored by 63 points.

JACKSONVILLE 17, Pittsburgh 0 (+4) - There isn't a
healthy body anywhere in Pittsburgh's offensive
backfield, and the Steelers have lost four in a row to
the Jaguars, who have also covered in each of the last
six meetings. Obvious best bet.

MONDAY NIGHT

NEW ORLEANS
27, Minnesota 13 (+3) - Can't go past the
Saints' huge quarterback edge at home. And didn't
this number come up a little - or maybe more than a
little - on the light side?

BEST BETS: WASHINGTON, JACKSONVILLE, NEW ORLEANS
