Default Chad Demands Trade

Johnson says he won't attend team functions, demands trade

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson left no room for doubt Wednesday: He wants out of Cincinnati as fast as possible and he doesn't plan on reporting for any future Bengal function -- mandatory or voluntary.

What spurred Johnson's immediate reaction was a statement made by quarterback Carson Palmer that indicated Johnson had told Palmer he would be at the team's mandatory minicamp in mid-June. Johnson said that wasn't true.

"I want to make this very clear,'' Johnson said Wednesday. "I don't know where he got that. I made no assertion to Carson that I would do that. Nothing has changed from what I've been saying for three months that I don't want to play for the Bengals.''

Johnson made one of his strongest statements in saying he is not planning on reporting to any team functions because he wants to be traded.

"I want to be traded before the draft, and if that doesn't happen, I want to be traded as soon as possible,'' Johnson said. "I don't intend on reporting to anything.''

Well I guess that rules out Dallas as Chad's next stop - unless Wade Phillips gets fired!

Could you imagine the circus in Dallas if they added Ocho Cinco and Pacman to the mix?

Now Houshamazilli says they should trade Johnson just to get rid of the distraction he will cause being in Cincy:

Wow!!

"If he's not traded it's going to be a problem." Houshmandzadeh told ESPN's Bob Holtzman.

Now you gotta get rid of him right? I had to look it up but, I thought at first this might be a Drew Rosenhaus curve ball but, he's not Housh's agent.

When Chad Johnson starts doing sit-ups in his driveway, I'll be convinced that something will actually happen.

Until then ...

Bengals reportedly turn down an offer from the Skins that would have amounted to the #21 pick this weekend and a conditional 3rd round pick that could turn into a #1 in '09 if certain clauses are met.

Other than the potential cap hit I cannot think of why the Bengals would turn that down when the guy is threatening to not even show up to camp this summer.

Cap hit is the primary reason.

In addition, Mike Brown is a stubborn SOB. He'd rather make a point than improve the team. They know that Chad is not going to sit out the final years of his prime. They have all the control on this issue, and they are not going to back down to the demands of a pre-Modona.

I'm no capologist so could someone explain to me why a trade would hurt Cincy. Why can't the Skins take over the cap space?

It's based on the signing bonus. The Bengals signed Chad to an extention with an $8 million signing bonus. That money has already been paid. If he were to be traded, that money would be subtracted from their cap. There is really no way around the cap hit. The 'Skins could offer cash as compensation, but the team would still take a cap hit.

My head almost exploded trying to figure that out.

So his signing bonus is broken up though out (X) years of his contract and remain against even if he's traded?

Well, the signing bonus is paid upfront, but the cap hit is spread out over the years of the contract.

So the Bengals have paid the bonus, but the cap hit continues through the length of his contract, regardless of who he is playing for. Once they pay the bonus, there is no way out of the cap hit for the remaining years.
