Default Big Hurt Released

Blue Jays release Thomas after slow start to 2008 season

TORONTO -- Slumping designated hitter Frank Thomas was released Sunday by the Blue Jays, who cut the 19-year veteran one day after he became angry for being taken out of the lineup.

Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi told ESPN's Peter Gammons that the release of Thomas was "by mutual consent. He doesn't want to be here if he's not going to play much, and we don't want him to be unhappy. He handled it with class, and I appreciate that."

Ricciardi and Thomas met in the clubhouse early Sunday.

"Our best opportunity is to put other guys in the lineup at this point," Ricciardi told The Associated Press. "Obviously, reduced playing time is not something that he was interested in. In order to let him go forward and get on with his career, I think it's fair to do it at this point."

The move leaves the Blue Jays on the hook for $7,081,967, the remainder of his $8 million salary this year in the $18.12 million, two-year contract the 39-year-old Thomas signed in November 2006.

Thomas was hitless in his past 13 at-bats and had gone 4-for-35 since homering in three straight games April 5-8. Known as a slow starter, he batted .167 with three homers and 11 RBIs for Toronto this year.

Any chance he winds up a Ray? Good move even though they still owe him 7MM?

Thomas won't stay unemployed for long...maybe a few more hours.

This has to be a money move or just plain insanity. Thomas has plenty in the tank & has always been a slow starter. He used to drive me nuts early in the year over with the ChiSox but come year's end, had me smiling for the most part.

It'll be a big plus to get him in TB IMO...

I don't know from everything I have heard about this it sounds to me like Thomas' ego got bruised and he could not handle the idea of being benched despite the fact he is hitting only .167 with just 3 homers in 60 ABs and just 1 RBI in his last 34 at bats. Given that he is a full time DH he should have expected to see his playing time reduced since he brings nothing to the table defensively.

I cannot help but wonder if there is a bit more to this under the surface that is not being reported.

It appears he has gotten tired of the Jays, and has made it very clear. They did not part company in a "friendly" way.
I'm not sure if he has much to offer anyone anymore, but he deserves a chance to find out.

Jayson Stark, on Mike & Mike this morning said the A's and Mariners are the leading contenders for Thomas. He also said that he has heard from a lot of 'baseball people' who think Thomas has little left to give a team.

Everything is about ego with Thomas. That's what ultimately ran him out of the South Side in Chicago. If he's not hitting, he's sulking & making excuses besides acting like past stats should keep people from riding him for the present.

He won't be going to Tampa after all, he is headed back to Oakland instead:

Another good (cheap), low-risk move by Oakland.

Good deal for the A's. Can't hurt to have a powerful veteran bat, especially at a bargain price.

When Buck comes back, who is out? My guess would be Sweeney.
As was said, this is a very low-risk, potential high reward move for the A's.
