Cool Anthony's Week 2 Picks

Last week: 3-13. Season totals: 15-31-2, Pct. .333. Best Bets: 3-6, Pct. .333.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. Jets
20, BUFFALO 10 (+4 1/2) - When a division shapes up as a tight three-team race, the difference between sweeping the division's fourth team and splitting with them can be the difference between winning the division and finishing third. Therefore the Jets cannot afford the luxury of a letdown coming off Sunday night's win at Miami, and don't read too much into Ryan Fitzpatrick's effort last week in New England.

Cincinnati 17, CLEVELAND 6 (+3) - The same principle applies equally well to this game - and speaking of principles, the quarterback situation in Cleveland vindicates the principle that a problem can create its own solution: Being reduced to making a week-to-week choice between a quarterback on his last legs and a quarterback with no arm may very well result in the Browns getting the opportunity to choose Jake Locker in next April's draft.

PITTSBURGH 16, Baltimore 10 (+1) - Ben who? Pittsburgh is getting it done without him, and the Ravens may be without Ray Rice (bruised knee). If the Steelers do go into their bye week 4-0 (after which Big Ben is eligible to return), look out.

ATLANTA 31, San Francisco 14 (+7) - All the Falcons have to do is steal one or two more on the road the way they did last week, and, to use Bill Polian's favorite phrase, they're a fait accompli for the playoffs the way they play at home. Meanwhile, the normally genteel-to-a-fault Bay Area sports media has really been letting Mike Singletary have it all week. Can't see this one even being competitive.

TENNESSEE 20, Denver 17 (+7) - Vince Young looked dreadful last week despite the win over the Giants, and Chris Johnson managed all of 34 yards facing a 3-4 defense two weeks ago, contrasting starkly with the 142 and 125 he has racked up against the 4-3 in his other two games this year. Take the points.

GREEN BAY 52, Detroit 3 (+14 1/2) - I wouldn't want to be anyone even remotely connected with the Lions this Sunday after the way Green Bay booted that game away Monday night - and that's without even bringing up their 19-game road losing streak to the Packers (which goes so far back it actually includes three games at Milwaukee!) during which they've only so much as covered the spread on four occasions. Best bet of the week in what could be the blowout of the year.

Seattle 27, ST. LOUIS 10 (+1 1/2) - So long as Matt Hasselbeck stays healthy, the Seahawks have a chance in the underwhelming NFC West, and they've won ten in a row over the Rams, who may be without Steven Jackson (groin). Plus the Rams can't possibly win back-to-back games at home after losing a co-NFL-record 14 straight at home, can they?

NEW ORLEANS 21, Carolina 13 (+13 1/2) - It serves the Saints right for not going for the TD in overtime, which would have covered the spread. The Panthers have won eight of their last nine in Louisiana outright - and what's this about Drew Brees wearing a knee brace at practice on Wednesday?

OAKLAND 20 (+3 1/2), Houston 14 - And it serves the Texans right for not making Dallas wear the blue jerseys last week - and Bruce Gradkowski is quite playable at home, where he's 5-3 straight up as a starter, compared with 1-9 on the road.

Indianapolis 23, JACKSONVILLE 10 (+7) - David Garrard looked even worse than Vince Young last week, and unlike Young's team, Garrard's team didn't win - not even close. And Jack Del Rio was even desperate enough to claim Trent Edwards off waivers after Buffalo cut him. The Colts shouldn't have much trouble here.

PHILADELPHIA 24, Washington 16 (+6 1/2) - Michael Vick is hands-down the most valuable player on this year's Eagles, right? Well maybe not: In the game and a half in which middle linebacker Stewart Bradley has been in the lineup, the Eagles have allowed six points and 285 total yards; when he has not been on the field they've given up 56 points and 642 yards (Bradley left the opener against Green Bay with four minutes left in the first half due to a concussion, and missed both the remainder of that game and the following week at Detroit before returning last Sunday at Jacksonville). All eyes - and ears - will be on how the crowd greets the returning Donovan McNabb, but perhaps more relevant is the simply awful chemistry that prevails on the Washington defense, "courtesy" of the likes of Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall.

SAN DIEGO 27, Arizona 21 (+9) - Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good - a maxim the Cardinals can sure relate to after what happened last week. But the Chargers are seldom either lucky or good this early in the season so take the points in this one.

Chicago 31 (+3), N.Y. GIANTS 20 - How does your quarterback outpass the other team's quarterback 386 yards to 118, and you lose by 19 points? Playing with an utter lack of discipline and self-control "helps" - with offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie leading the way (and Ray Kroc thought he saw stupid baseball being played in San Diego once upon a time) - and it's difficult to control the urge to side with the road team in this series when it's both won and covered in the last seven meetings.

MONDAY NIGHT

New England
34, MIAMI 27 (+1) - Are we there yet? Well Chad Henne isn't, and may never be. It just seems as if the Dolphins are not ready for the big time.

BEST BETS: GREEN BAY, SEATTLE, CHICAGO
