Why would you pick Houston over St. Louis? The Cards owned the Astros this year. They went 11-5 against them and the only team they won more games against was Pittsburgh.

A. L.
Angels over the Yankees
Chicago over Boston

Neither the Yankees or Boston could win consistently on the road unless they were playing each other and Chicago and LA have the home field advantage in these series and both were able to win on the road this year.

Angels over White Sox in the ALCS

N. L.
Astros over Braves
Cards over Pads

Cards over Astros in the NLCS

Cards over the Angels in the World Series.

AL:
Chicago White Sox over Red Sox
Los Angeles Angels over Yankees

NL:
Atlanta Braves over Astros
San Diego Padres over St. Louis Cardinals

Angels over White Sox
Braves over Padres

Angels over Braves

Just to defend the Padres pick a bit...

I like the Padres as a team in a short series. They definitely don't have the staff to win 90+ games in a season, but I do like them in a short series. I like Peavy in games 1 and 4, yes, even against Carpenter. I'd imagine Eaton will go in game 2 and the Padres should go back to San Diego with a split. Astacio has pitched very well in August/September, giving them a good shot there. If they got up 2-1 in the series for game 4 at home, they could save Peavy for a game 5, or put him out there in Game 4.

The Cardinals are the better team, I think, but in a five game series, I really like how the Padres match up. Their flaws are covered up a bit.

I honestly just picked against the Red Sox and Yankees because I'm sick of seeing them. Mainly because I don't follow the AL enough.

St. Louis hasn't played a meaningful game since April. The Astros had to fight their way into the play offs and have perhaps the best three starters of anyone in baseball with Clemens, Oswalt and Pettitte. All are play off tested and have succeeded in the play offs before.

Holy cow! I agree 100% with Doublee's picks all the way through, even the reasoning behind the Yanks and BoSox losing in the opening round. I'm more nervous about the NL because the Padres could win a short series (as was mentioned by Doug). Also, betting against the Braves always makes me nervous. Ken Rosenthal was wise to write last week that Chris Carpenter is the key to the Cards' chances-- if he dominates like he sometimes has, the Cards will roll to the World Series.

By the way, as far as who made the playoffs, i'm still lying here in shock wondering how the Marlins didn't somehow make the playoffs. I guess that shows the value of winning close games (or not, in their case). If they had made it over the Astros, i might've picked them to win the Series. They have the starting pitching, the closer, the power hitting, the singles hitters, the speed... everything but the wins themselves.

their manager lost total control of the clubhouse early on in the season. Miguel Caberra stopped practicing in the outfield. McKeon also cost them any chance at resigning AJ Burnett- who is headed into the prime of his career. they are sure kicking themselves now for not trading him before the deadline.

So, then I guess it doesn't matter that the Cards took 5 of 8 from them after the break then. The same could be said for last year when the Cards had the division more or less wrapped up by the break and it didn't really matter and they did not have Carpenter or Mulder as they do this year. Having to fight to get into the playoffs can be a deterrant as well as the Cards have been able to rest some of their guys down the stretch. It did not seem to hurt today as they ran Peavy in the fifth today.
