I think Barry Larkin, Alex Rodriguez and Alfonso Soriano are the only middle infielders to join the 30/30 Club. A-Rod and Soriano are also members of the 40/40 Club.

That sounds right...

Phillips will be in some elite company when he hits his next HR.

Other than Utley, who would you rather have at 2nd base right now???

I might even make a case for Phillips over Utley, but... I won't

I think Freddy Sanchez in Pittsburgh is a pretty good offensive and defensive second baseman, though I don't know if I would say he is any better than Brandon Phillips. Utility infielder Aaron Miles in St. Louis is also fairly talented, as well as Robinson Cano in New York, who needs to improve defensively, but is an overlooked talent in the Yankee lineup.

Personally, I'd rather see Sanchez at 3B, because of his arm, but he does a very good job at 2B. This said, Phillips should be a fixture in the Reds line-up as long as he wishes to remain there.
Other kids to look at would include Howie Kendrick of the Angels and Alexi Casilla of the Twins. Offensively, few players have the talent that Rickie Weeks has, but he is a defensive liability.

Wow...Cards are just in a complete tailspin...lost today 5-4 to Cincy. I knew they'd be hard pressed for a stretch run but I didn't see this coming...

That was a great pitching duel last night between NY and Toronto with Toronto winning. Kennedy allowed only one hit I believe.

Aaron Harang... 15th win last night...

I think the Reds are 25 and 6 when he pitches...

Pretty impressive

Alfonseca gets 4 games for hitting Helton...

Sounds about right for such an idiotic move...

That was pretty stupid, wasn't it?
By the way, how about the Yankees coming back from 7-2 to win 8-7 tonight? They were pretty determined and got good work from their bullpen.

Thought of the day:

For a long time I used to go to bed early. Sometimes, when I had put out
my candle, my eyes would close so quickly that I had not even time to say
"I'm going to sleep." And half an hour later the thought that it was time
to go to sleep would awaken me; I would try to put away the book which, I
imagined, was still in my hands, and to blow out the light; I had been
thinking all the time, while I was asleep, of what I had just been
reading, but my thoughts had run into a channel of their own, until I
myself seemed actually to have become the subject of my book: a church, a
quartet, the rivalry between François I and Charles V. This impression
would persist for some moments after I was awake; it did not disturb my
mind, but it lay like scales upon my eyes and prevented them from
registering the fact that the candle was no longer burning. Then it would
begin to seem unintelligible, as the thoughts of a former existence must
be to a reincarnate spirit; the subject of my book would separate itself
from me, leaving me free to choose whether I would form part of it or no;
and at the same time my sight would return and I would be astonished to
find myself in a state of darkness, pleasant and restful enough for the
eyes, and even more, perhaps, for my mind, to which it appeared
incomprehensible, without a cause, a matter dark indeed.

I would ask myself what o'clock it could be; I could hear the whistling of
trains, which, now nearer and now farther off, punctuating the distance
like the note of a bird in a forest, shewed me in perspective the deserted
countryside through which a traveller would be hurrying towards the
nearest station: the path that he followed being fixed for ever in his
memory by the general excitement due to being in a strange place, to doing
unusual things, to the last words of conversation, to farewells exchanged
beneath an unfamiliar lamp which echoed still in his ears amid the silence
of the night; and to the delightful prospect of being once again at home.

I knew I always liked Nick Swisher.

Now I really do, after his comments following the A's' 6-5 win over the Rangers Thursday night:

"Nobody wants to finish in last place. It was nice for us to get a little payback for what they did to us in Texas."

Now if there were only about 750 more players - and about 300 million fans - who had this same attitude; then we could stop all this pathetic whining about salary caps and market size.

Yes what a comeback by the Yankees and the Braves last night.

Daric Barton of the Oakland A's hit his first MLB homer last night, what kind of career do you feel he will end up having?

I like his approach at the plate. I doubt if he'll be a 40+ homer guy, but I could see him hitting 25-30 annually with a .280+ BA.

Default Jacoby Ellsbury

Jacoby Ellsbury is really exciting to watch! Last night he extended his hitting streak to 13 games. He's hit safely in every game since being called up Sept. 1. Since then, he's hitting .426 (20 for 47) with three doubles, a triple, three home runs, 13 RBIs, 11 runs, and four stolen bases. Between Boston and Pawtucket, Ellsbury has hit in 38 of his last 40 games, starting July 21.

What'd you guys/gals think about him?
