Canseco, Bonds, and A-Rod are the only players to ever reach 40/40 in a season.

Hanley Ramirez needs just 2 home runs and one stolen base to reach the 30/50 club. Only Barry Bonds and Eric Davis have ever hit as many as 30 homers and stolen as many as 50 bases in one season.

Jimmy Rollins needs 3 homers to reach the 30/30 club as well.

How about Curtis Granderson joining the 20/20/20/20 club? 20 doubles, triples, homers, and stolen bases in one season is quite an achievement.

Christian Guzman nearly did the 20/20/20/20 club one season with the Twins. He hasn't done much since then, however.
As for the Twins, it appears they will make a concerted effort to re-sign Torii Hunter, but I don't think he will come cheap. He will not give them the discount he'd have given them if they would have added a bat to the line-up to make a push for the playoffs. As for Johan, I can see the team trading him to an NL team if Torii doesn't come back. That would free up a lot of Mr. Pohlad's money and they might even spend a bit of it to bring in a 3B and another CF.

Congrats to the NY Yankees for taking two out of three in Boston this past weekend. They are making a serious run to win their division. But with about 13 or 14 games to go it will not be easy to overcome 4 1/2 games.

Eh... screw the Yankees! CONGRATS to Jim Thome for his 500th Homerun... What a way to get it too - bottom of the ninth walk-off!!!

Alfonso Soriano had 46 home runs and 41 stolen bases last season, according to BaseballReference.com, ESPN.com and MLB.com, but he primarily played left field.

Phillies hold on to beat the Cardinals 13-11...after being up 11-0...I should not have to be pacing after an 11-0 lead...that bullpen is horrible. Radio announcer goes at one point "this is so surprising, that this is..." long pause..."happening..." The color commentator, Larry Anderson just calmly says, "not that surprising, since it's been happening"

The Mets are reeling and the NY Yankees are surging.

The Mets are reeling mainly for one reason, Willie Randolph.

Mid-year last season, when the Mets were rolling and the Phillies struggling I would not have called Charlie Manuel a better manager than Willie Randolph. But, Charlie inspires passion and gets these guys to play hard every night. Willie does the exact opposite. The Mets are every bit as talented as the Phillies offensively and with a better pitching staff. If the Phillies do this they will have done it with heart and determination.

Here is a quote from Willie Randolph that instantly shows why he is leading the Mets to a collapse...

Quote:
Said Randolph: "When we sip champagne later on, it'll be a little sweeter."
You gotta fight for this inch, Willie. You can't expect handouts in a race for the division.

Here's a quote from David Wright about last night's 9-8 loss to the Nats, in which the Mets blew a 4-0 lead...

Quote:
"I thought we took steps in the right direction."
By getting a bunch of runs and getting ONE run in the 9th when down 9-7? That quote follows Willie's BS perfectly.

The Phillies have blown their share of leads this season, and then some with their pitching staff, but they seem to view it completely different. One team picks themselves up and fights to get back what they've lost and one team is just waiting for what they expect.

If there is one certainty in sports, it is that the best team doesn't always win, and in this instance, the Mets are trying to make that happen.

Not saying the Phillies are bad or weak or anything like that, but the Mets are the better team, the Phillies just have way more heart and that counts a lot. 12-6 on the Mets head to head this year.

Harang beats Zambrano again...

Is there any doubt that the Reds got a better deal than the Cubs when the resigned Harang (the better of the two pitchers) for 1/3 the cost of Zambrano?

I'm just thankful that it was someone of quality that put my Cubs ta sleep instead of some no name. Still hurts but at least makes sense in a way...

Of course the pain re-ignites when Z pitched like said no name...

Zambrano has not pitched well since signing the big extension. Harang is a relative bargain, but hasn't got the history that Zambrano has.

As to the NL East, no one is playing particularly well, but the Mets are certainly not looking very good. They are going in the wrong direction into the playoffs.

Hey CK, did the Reds not call up Jay Bruce yet?
