Thumbs down What the hell is Florida thinking?

Florida signs football coach Zook to two-year extension

January 8, 2004

GAINESVILLE, Florida (Ticker) - Ron Zook can stop apologizing.

The University of Florida signed the oft-maligned football coach to a two-year contract extension on Thursday, one week after concluding the season with a 37-17 loss to Iowa in the Outback Bowl.

Following the lopsided loss, Zook apologized to Gator fans, claiming that his team was not ready to play.

The loss was expected to start a new round of speculation regarding the future of Zook, who has posted a pair of 8-5 seasons after replacing Steve Spurrier. Instead the university renewed its faith in Zook with a contract extension at undisclosed financial terms.

Ever since Florida lost Spurrier, they have gone from a regular national title contender to a mediocre, middle-of-the-pack team. As of playing in the Outback Bowl was insulting enough to a team that used to play in BCS bowls, they got blown out by 20, and the coach's comments after the game were pretty pathetic (apologies to the fans -- don't apologize, get off your butt and coach a better game).

10 losses in two years is not Florida football, so I can't understand why they are extending Zook's contract. Oh, and there's some guy name Spurrier who is looking for a college job, too. Brilliant!

Zook is a great recruiter, NOT a great coach. (The basketball team seems to have the same problem, as a matter of fact.)

How would you feel about Spurrier to Kentucky, Marc? Seems like if the team doesn't get anywhere with Rich Brooks they could be looking for a new coach again.

I know exactly what they're thinking, Marc. I had the same thought at first, thought about it for a moment, then said, "Ah. That's it."

This is it: He wanted paycheck security. That is, he renegotiated a contract extension for the sole purpose of getting a bigger payoff when he is fired. And he will be fired. Not till Spurrier is ready to return, which won't be till next December, but he will be fired.

It's no conincidence this is announced nine days after Spurrier crawls into Saddam Hussein's spider hole. Florida, feeling bad for the guy, knowing they'll fire him in a year, simply increased the payout, probably by double. After all, he did recruit Chris Leak. That's worth something.

I don't know ... we almost got Parcells, believe it or not, though. I don't think we're going to be looking for a new coach anytime soon.

Well, it looks like FSU and Miami will continue to beat Florida for at least the next two years anyways.

That's an interesting take, Dave, but it's hard to believe that Florida is willing to accept another mediocre season when they don't even know if Spurrier wants to come back right away. If anything, they are taking a chance in letting someone else nab him.

No, Marc. He's burned out. He's tired. He needs to play a good three year's worth of golf in a year, and then, when he's finally played the last 18th hole of the season, he'll dial up Florida and say, "I'm ready to get back in." Zook will be fired mere seconds later. Any other scenario involves him retiring for good. He won't go anywhere else. He likes his golf too much. Where's he gonna go? FSU? I don't think so. UCLA? Mebbe, but I don't think they'd hire him. So, he'll dial up Florida the same day Tiger Woods is voted Golfer of the year again...

^^^that's funny, because I've been secretly hoping that Dorell has another subpar season, forcing UCLA AD Dan Guerrero to go after Spurrier...but yeah, unlikely since UCLA is trying to limit how much they pay coaches.

Jefe, you seem like a pretty intelligent college football fan (if nothing else), why on earth would you want Spurrier, one of the three devils of the game, coaching your team? Yuck.

(For the record, the other two are Bobby Bowden and Barry Switzer.)

Hehe...he is a devil yes, but he's quite the proven college football coach. And frankly, I know all these wonderful California recruits are seeing how dominant USC is becoming again while UCLA is stuck with an unproven head coach, an offensive guy whose offense was one of the worst in DI football for 2003. I don't like the guy, but I know he'd bring success to the Bruin program. I'm hoping Dorell will turn out all right, and we'll see how he does with recruiting, but having a big name in college ball does help a lot, and Spurrier is quite the name with clout.

Come on you dont double the guys paycheck if your going to fire him in a year! His team was the only team to beat LSU this year!Did you think thats part of the reason Zooks contract was extened? Because of the teams he beat. They were the only team this year to give the National Champs LSU a loss! That = contract extension.
P.S. That tops my list of stupidest things said this year.Congradulations!
